  • Heraldry is a system of blazoning arms onto shields and armor to ascertain the allegiance of the bearer. The soldiers of the noble families of Ferelden oftentimes carry shields with the heraldry of the family of which they serve. The dwarves of Orzammar also occasionally wield shields with the heraldry of the noble house they are affiliated to. The Dalish clans also use heraldries which belonged to the noble elven families of the Dales since they consider themselves as their descendants.

In the common usage, heraldry means either a generic system of identification, or a very specific one that was developed in Europe at 1100. It has gone through a lot phases in its history from the early stages of combat heraldry to the degenerate heraldry of the 17th and 18th centuries, and back to the revival heraldry seen in some places today. Here we consider the meaning to be the last one of the above. A nicely defining idea of this system is that a heraldic design is such an identifying mark, that can be explained in the language of blazon. From this depiction a person knowing this heraldic system even at superficial level can draw an image (called Emblazon) that is essentially the same picture than the original one and readily identifiable as such. Fulfilling this demand does not mean that the design is good heraldry, that requires a bit more, but it can be considered one definition of a heraldic design. The heraldic systems are also rule systems of identification. In other words, the heraldic design marks a body, be that a brave knight or a most solemn fraternity of trade or arms companions. The West-European heraldic system, the heraldry we know from Spain to Scandinavia, was also a system for battlefield recognition, which contributed to a lot of characteristics of the heraldry as the form followed a function. This is to say that the heraldic designs of this system aim for instant recognition of their bearer in the most trying and stressful conditions imaginable. On the noisy, sometimes dark or smoky battlefield where there are people that you are friendly with and then these others with whom you have a mutual understanding of the fact that, given a chance, first one who is able, will kill, maim or in any other available fashion incapacitate the other one. Now before we go on, let's talk a bit about studying heraldry. Most of us have studied heralry mainly from books and the internet. There are numerous sources where one can study the European heraldic system and this section of the handbook by no means aims to be even a comprehensive primer, rather an adequate introduction. Thus, perhaps it is best to discuss those common sources a bit before going any further. There exist numerous books and innumerable websites which seek to describe the heraldry comprehensively. Unfortunately this broad and proud aim is often their very shortcoming. You should note that most of the literature and practically all of the websites discuss particularily English or British heraldic tradition, and what's more, most of them present the modern English practice as the one and only heraldry. As a fairly large portion of the heraldic practices are universal, this is not a great drawback. Mostly it means that it introduces such complexity that simply wasn't there at the era our Society is interested in. Unfortunately it also gives such absolutes which do not hold for our scope. That being said, heraldry books are almost always fun and nice to have around and even the poor books are better than none, just so that as a herald you should know about this characteristic of theirs.

Another major symbol that appears on tapestries is a stylized golden (or white with golden outline) Crown of Daventry with three points often on a field of violet. A tapestry representing this has hung behind the throne at various points in the kingdom's history. There are a couple of coat of arms but exact meanings are not clear. One that may represent Edward's dynasty (existing on the walls at the time of his death, and later), and now Graham's as he was the adopted heir to the kingdom. Two of the heraldric shields weaved into purple tapestries that hung to each side (or at least to the leftside) of the throne. The crest is divided into three fields divided by two parallel slanting lines ('parte per bend'): the top in violet and later red (violet perhaps represting edward, and red representing Graham'), the middle in gold, and the bottom in a kind of turquoise-green. Two red dots or red crosses, one or the other rests inside the turquoise field. The original tapestries with the shield with top violet field were removed soon after King Graham became king, but were up not long after Alexander returned to the catle with the rescued Rosella, but replaced with the red field. Another variant of the later version has white pale with two blue lines, with red on the top and turquoise on the bottom with two short horizontal red lines (one on top of the other). The one on the right-side of the throne, maybe split in half down the middle ('parte per pale'). With the color turquoise on the left, and the color gold on the right. A variant coat of arms that appears a tapestry/banner contains a stylized and squished crown as the helm. The crown has five points with three middle points standing out with knobs at the top of the points. The shield of arms itself is divided into four sections with crossed lines ('parte per cross') in between. Each section is a different color starting from the top red and gold, and then blue and green. It is supported by two stylized unicorns (possibly lions with unicorn heads), perhaps related there is a red banner with Daventry's two standing lions one over the other as well. It is possible this one represents the new king, and his family (red for Graham, gold for rosella, blue for Valanice, and perhaps green for Alexander but there is not enough evidence to know for sure). Daventry's lions also appears as two statues next to its gate. Another variant coat of arms is divided into four parts ('parte per cross'), with the first part in azure fading form light to solid (from left to right) with a stylized diamond with, a stylized "K" inside., the second part contains a standing dragon (dragon in azure), the third part a stylized crown (with a single point, with the Christian cross on top of it), and the last part is nine alternating lines in azure and white ('parte per paly'). In addition there are other tapestries with heraldric imagery. During the period when the magic mirror was missing Edward hung a tapestry in the niche with three vertical lines ('per pale') in the order of blue, white and green, that end in a swallowtail banner design.

Knights also gain the legal right to formally display their own heraldry. Even when a commoner or lowly mercenary gets knighted, he legally becomes a member of "the nobility" and can invent his own personal heraldry - even if he is a poor hedge knight, and not a "Lord" that has the right to sit in judgement, and doesn't own or control land. The followers of a noble family can display their lord's heraldry (i.e. Lannister footsoldiers can carry banners with Lannister heraldry), but it is illegal for members of the smallfolk to just make up and use their own heraldry. The heraldry of each noble House is also accompanied by a specific House motto, or "words". These typically take the form of boasts or battle-cries, such as House Baratheon's words "Ours is the fury!", or House Tully's words "Family, Duty, Honor". House Stark is a major exception in that unlike most other Houses, its words are not a boast but the ominous warning "Winter is coming". House words do not typically appear on a House's heraldry, in the books as well as the TV series.
