  • Miriel (ミリエル Mirieru, Myriel in the Japanese version) is a playable character from Fire Emblem Awakening. According to the official Japanese website, she is voiced by Yurika Aizawa.[1] In the English version she is voiced by Tara Platt.
  • Miriel never met her parents. Actually, she does not even know who they are. All she knows is that she was sold to her former Master in a slave market in Mos Espa, Tatooine, when she was too little to remember. She has also learned that, shortly after her purchase, her masters had to flee Tatooine in a hurry. She never knew why they fled to Corelia, but she knew very well the consequences of it: Because of the anti-slavery laws in there, she was constantly moving: Coronet, Kor Vella, Tyrena, Doaba Guerfel, Bela Vistal; she would never stay more than a few seasons in the same city... It also hardly mattered for her, since she was never allowed to leave the house, and the only time she actually got to "see" the city was when her Masters were moving in or out of it. She never quite understood why did her Masters kept her, with all the troubles she gave them. She eventually grew up to become a quiet, docile and shy teenager. She would always blindly obey her orders, so much that her Master wouldn`t even chain or lock her, such was his confidence that she would never try to escape. And, since she wasn`t allowed by her Master to talk to others, unless she was spoken to, she frequently spoke to the Estate pets: Jingles (a Kowakian Monkey Lizard) and Toothie (a Massiff). She always found it funny and curious how it seemed that they could actually "understand" her, althought they never did communicate back. But, just because her Master wouldn`t lock her up, it didn`t mean she had an easy life; Far from it: They only fed her once a day, at the end of the night, when her little stomach was already aching from hunger. Still, she wouldn`t complain; She frequently had to work for endless hours non-stop, sometimes to the point of her little white hands turning red, from the blood of her hurt fingers. Still, she wouldn`t complain; She often slept on the cold hard floor of a basement, with nothing else besides her overused clothes to protect her from the harsh cold, and, still, she wouldn`t complain. Quite the contrary! Because she never had anything else in her entire life, she still miracously managed to live a content life, and even cherish it. She would find pleasure where no one else would, when she discovered that her Masters had left a little bit of Ryshcate Pastry (her favourite dish) leftovers on the meal they left for her; Or beauty as she stared the "ballet" of dust particles illuminated by the few sunrays that managed to pass through the closed windows of her basement; Or confort, when her Masters would give her "new" used clothes, which would bring warmer nights for a season or two. No matter what, she always managed to "see" beauty where no one would ever even imagine it. Absolutely nothing seemed able to "steal" her lovely optimism. Until they came... On a cold quiet night, when she was 16 years old, it happened for the first time: A dream like no other she had before... So real, so vivid. In this dream she would feel things that she never, despite everything she went through, had experienced; She would dream of places she never went, with so much detail that, if she later talked to someone that actually knew the place she would probably know more about that place than such person; She would dream of people she never met, waking up with a feeling that she was deeply connected to this person; She would dream of situations she herself had never experienced. She could feel the anguish of a hungered slave in Mos Espa, as he awaits to be sold, even thought she never felt that, and she, herself, was a slave too. She could perfectly feel the despair of a mother who lost her only son to the Sarlacc's Pit, even thought she never knew what a mother's love is, as she never had it. All these feelings, all these emotions, awakened something in her that she never though she had. She discovered that she could perfectly deal with her own misery... But to experience the misery of others was excruciating to her. It felt like the whole universe desperately needed help, and she couldn`t do anything about it. So she tried everything to get rid of these dreams: She tried to think of nothing just before sleeping, only to discover that it actually turned her upcoming dreams even more powerful and touching. She tried waking up several times during her sleep, despite all the tireness of her fragile body, and found out that, by doing this, instead of one dream, she would have several. She tried to not sleep at all, only to learn that her abused little body needed that sleep, and would end up sleeping and having those dreams anyway, with the after effect of having to work the next morning absolutely tired. She even tried once to drink a little bit of Whyren`s Reserve (the famed Corelian wine) that she stole from her masters (the only time in her life she stole something from anyone), only to find out that not only it did not "block" these dreams, but that her delicate body does not tolerate well beverages, and she would wake up with a terrible hangover... It did not matter. As time went by, the dreams became more and more vivid, to the point where she could swear that small objects were moving in her basement while she was dreaming! She never believed in ghosts histories, but how else could she explain what that was. It was like something was urging her to do something else of her life. This feeling grew stronger and stronger on her, but, still, she was afraid of leaving. Then, it happened... On a stormy night, Miriel`s Master was unusually late from his work. When her Master`s wife was beginning to get worried, he arrived! The Master was all dirty, with blood stains all over his expensive clothes, panting. He somehow managed to grasp a little breath, and said -" Woman, we must leave now! You know what I`m speaking of! Go! Move! Get only your most crucial belongings, as we don`t have much time!!! Now, woman, NOW!!!" It was like all hell broke loose on the Estate: All the employees were running around, lots of shouting, the Master was like a madman shouting orders and curses alike, while his wife was desperately crying, as she tried her best to pack light for traveling, vases felt and broke... In this absolute mess, there was something that completely stood out of this picture: Miriel. She was quiet, calm, with a beautiful serene smile, even though she did not knew what her master was running from. That was because, although she did not knew what the "danger" was, Miriel had been dreaming about this exact scene every night for the last few weeks. At first she was disturbed, since her "dreams" were never the same from one night to another. But this dream was different. She only saw herself. She was always calm in it. The dream kept repeating itself to the point that she was actually expecting it to happen. And then it did! She knew where everybody was. She knew what everyone was doing. Where and when they were not looking at a particular spot. All she had to do now was escape. She had practiced this to perfection on all those dreams she previously had. It was specially easy because her Master never bothered to chain or lock her. Ever. They had the utmost confidence she would never think about running away. They were wrong. Easy. But, still, she could not leave. Her feet couldn`t move against her Master's will. She wasn`t as calm as she was just before. Now she was trembling. Now she was sweating. Why can`t her move? Is it because she does not even know why she must leave? To her own eyes, her life was good until these dreams begun. She knew it wasn`t an easy life, but she was happy, on her own way. -"Move!" She thought once, and again she didn`t move, as her mind clouded again with doubts: -"Move? Go where? I barely know where I am! I have never gone anywhere without my master telling me how, when and where!". These thoughts were suffocating her now, to the point that she could barely breath. -"Just Move!" The thought hit her again, this time stronger than before. Her delicate knees began to move, as she gracefully stood up. She wasn`t nervous about escaping. No, not at all. She somewhat knew exactly what was going to happen inside the Estate for the next few minutes. No it wasn`t that. What she was feeling was something else. Like a funny feeling in her stomach and some heavy excessive breathing... Then it hit her: - "A-am I a-afraid?" And so she was. So much afraid that, although she did manage to stand up, she was basically standing still on the very same spot. She was afraid of making her own decisions, as she never did that. Of walking outside, as she never did that. Of talking to others, without been spoken to, as she had never done that too. She was too afraid. - "MOVE, Goddammit!" With this last thought, she began moving. Very slowly at first. Every little step of her gracious feet felt heavier and heavier than the one before. She had to literally conquer every inch towards her freedom. She wasn`t afraid of the escape itself. She knew exactly what was going to happen. She was just afraid of the unknown. But she was overcoming it! She was just a few steps from leaving the Estate now. She was almost free! Suddenly: -"Sir, your slave is trying to run away!!!", an ugly looking bodyguard a few meters away from her said; -"How can this be?"- Thought Miriel - "This never happened on all those dreams!", as she began to move faster towards the exit. -"Catch her, Morons!"- shouted the Master - "She must not escape!!!" Now the bodyguard was moving fast towards Miriel, and others where coming from the hall! Then she realizes it! In all of Miriel`s dreams, she never had any doubt. She would always calmly walk away. She NEVER stayed so much time thinking about her escape. Miriel remembered that, in her dreams, by this time she was already gone. Since she did not do what she saw in her dreams, this was a whole new reality. One that she did not knew the outcome! She became nervous again. She did not knew anymore what was going to happen. She was, for the first time since her escape attempt began, on her own. The first bodyguard grasps her arm, with enough strength to almost break it in two, but she graciously moves away her body while grasping and twisting one of his fingers, breaking it on the process. Pure reflex. The bodyguard let go her arm. She was not thinking anymore. She must escape. A second body guard almost gets her, but, somehow, she jumps exactly in the second he jumps for her, which makes him miss and hit the floor instead. She wasn`t even looking at him, as he was behind her. Again, pure reflex. No thoughts, no doubts, nothing. She just must escape. Everything is clear. Then she hears a sound, and another, and another. Something she never ever heard before. And feels a powerful sting in her left shoulder, that turns her on impact, making her fall to the floor. From a distance, she sees her Master wielding a DL-44 blaster, and two other bodyguards moving towards her. - "H-He shot me!", Miriel thought But now, instead of panic, she thinks of nothing. She just stays focused on staying alive. Again, no thoughts, no doubts, nothing. - "Get up... NOW!", Miriel thought to herself as she suddenly gets up and starts running. Faster and faster. She hears another sound, of what now she knows its a blaster shot, and instantly moves to her left while running. The shot passes a few inches away from her right thigh. Again, no thoughts, no doubts. Pure reflex. - "I must run!", Miriel thinks to herself, as she starts to run even faster. Miriel didn't knew she could run THAT fast! Somehow she just knew that the bodyguards following her just couldn`t keep up with her. She didn`t need to turn around and look. She just knew it. And kept running. She hears yet another shot. This time the sound was weak and far away from her. She kept running. No thoughts, no doubts, nothing. She kept running until she couldn`t hear them, or anything else, anymore. And then Miriel stopped running, realizing no one was chasing her anymore. She was free! And that's when the fear and doubts came back to her troubled little mind again, as she awkwardly collapsed to the floor. -"Ouch!", she said as her left shoulder started to hurt like something she had never felt before. It felt far worse than the casual beatings her former master would give her. But it didn`t matter! She was breathless, hurt, bleeding, desperated, afraid... But she was, finally, free! Miriel spent the next few days in Coronet. She knew her master wouldn`t stay, since he was running from something that was in Coronet, so she figured she would be safe. But running away wasn`t easy. Miriel slept on the greasy floor of an abandoned speeder garage she found, and ate very little using the measly credits she got from caring souls that would be kind to her in the streets, as she was too afraid and hurt to try to look for work. All this didn't bother her, as she was used to unconfortable sleeps and meager meals her whole life. But her dreams were back much stronger than before, and her left elbow was really getting worse. For a few weeks, Miriel spoked to several persons she would met, being careful not to expose herself too much, as she tried to explain her dreams, and asked if they could help her. The usual response she would get was mockery. As time passed, her wounds started to get worse. She got feverish and quiet, and, eventually, had even worser dreams which, because of her fever, she did not knew if it was a "dream" or simply a hallucination from her fever. Miriel wouldn`t risk going to a hospital, as she was too much afraid of someone discovering her, and telling her former master. She knew he wouldn`t risk coming to Coronet, but he was a very wealthy man, and bounty hunters were cheap in Bestine. Because of this, she almost never left the abandoned speeder garage whereabouts. But she was getting worse... Her energy was almost gone. Miriel now could barely move her left arm. She did not have the energy to even move herself to a nearby trash can, in the vain hope of finding some leftovers. She just had not the strength anymore to fight for her life. Her fragile little body had, finally, gave up. Then she noticed that someone's shadow was inside the abandoned speeder garage, and that it was moving towards her. She was afraid at first, but something on this person felt unusually calm. It felt like this person emanates peace. It was a nice soothing feeling. She tried to speak, but she was too weak to do so. Miriel thought to herself: -"At... l-least I die as a free w-woman..". It was her last glimpse, before she collapsed. When Miriel woke up and realized she wasn`t dead, she immediately started to wonder how much time she spent while unconscious... Days? Weeks? Then she noticed that the wound on her left elbow had been cared for. It still hurted, but it was much better, and she could actually move her left arm again. Also, the fever was gone... Then Miriel remembered the person she last saw and tried to look for him/her, only to find no one around. She was, again, all alone The only thing she found was an used spaceport ticket to Dantooine, with the following written in its back: At first she was relieved that someone actually seemed to understand her... But then, she realized that this person was gone, and had left only a few friendly words. Strangely, during all the time Miriel was unconscious, she did not have a single dream. She was in peace, something she had not experienced in the last 3 years. -"Maybe it was something that kind person did?" She thought to herself, as she was examinating the mysterious note that was left. Then Miriel noticed it! The clue was there all the time. It was the used travel ticket to Dantooine itself! -"M-Maybe I should travel to Dantooine?", Miriel thought to herself. And so she spent the following 6 weeks doing any job she could find, until she eventually could afford a ticket to Dantooine. She tried to stay on the whereabouts of the abandoned speeder garage, and avoided all unecessary contact, as she would not risk letting her former master know where she was. Specially not now that she was so close to fulfill what now seemed to be her destiny. She was determined to go to Dantooine. The Dantooine Spaceport was silent and empty, as it should be expected because of the time she arrived. Despite all her hard work, Miriel could only afford to pay for a smuggler to take her in the Cargo Hold of his freighter to Dantooine. It did not matter. Miriel was too excited to worry about food, confort, or anything else. Her dreams had begun once more, and she felt, once again, that she needed help. Since it was very late, Miriel wandered for hours in Dantooine, not finding a single soul on the streets. To her, it felt like weeks. Dantooine was calm, silent. It almost looked like abandoned to her. And this very thought brought a powerful chill down her spine. She needed help. She needed caring. Then, she felt it! That same good feeling. The same peace she experienced back in the abandoned garage in Coronet. It was overwhelming her senses! As she turns, she sees one of the most remarkable sights she ever saw, as a beautiful black with blue streaks haired woman graciously looks deep into her eyes, and says: Before Miriel could even answer, Laura, who she would later learn was a Master Jedi, says, as if reading her mind, in a kind and calming voice: And, finally, Miriel realized that her escape was over. She was free and among friends.
