In order to present a good public reputation, Valerie and Alan agreed to a sham marriage despite the objections of Matt Fielding, Alan's boyfriend. In fact, the whole marriage sham ended their relationship, despite Valerie telling Alan to leave her at the altar and go after Matt after he walked out on the wedding. Alan chose to go through with the ceremony instead. However, a few days later, an article outing Alan was published in the paper and Matt believed his friend Dave Erickson leaked it to the press. It is assumed that Valerie's marriage would be annulled.
