abstract
  • The mother of Saturn Girl, United Planets Councilwoman Ardeen was also Titan’s Ambassador to Earth. Like all Titanians, she is telepathic, transcending barriers of language and distance to communicate mentally. However, due to generations of organ atrophy, Titanians can no longer communicate verbally. Ardeen was originally unhelpful to the Legion, regarding her daughter and her colleagues as well-intentioned but misguided. After the Legion’s victory over Praetor Lemnos and Terror Firma, her attitude changed, and she became one of the main forces behind the United Planets’ offering the Legion funding and official status equal to the Science Police. She occasionally enlisted the team’s aid, for example alerting them to the astronomical phenomenon that heralded Supergirl’s arrival on 31st Century Earth. Called to a meeting with Princess Projectra and Nimra C LaFong, Ardeen was supportive of both sides, mediating in the discussion and attempting to mollify Projectra’s irate response to being told that, after her planet’s destruction, she was no longer royalty but simply a displaced person. However, her pro-Legion stance became troublesome since the political administration’s views changed. Ardeen’s use of her political powerto aid the Legion – such as urging Science Police forces to Triton at her daughter’s behest – cost her dearly. Nimra C LaFong called for Ardeen’s impeachment on the grounds of abuse of office, and Ardeen was placed under constant surveillance and ordered to have no contact with the Legion – an order she violated at least twice: once to offer support to Projectra, and once in a clandestine meeting with her daughter to inform Saturn Girl of some facts behind the UP’s anti-Legion position.
