  • IFF
rdfs:comment
  • IFF is one of the nano-augmentations in Deus Ex and Deus Ex: Invisible War. File:IFF.png It is a non-upgradeable augment that is installed at the start of the game.
  • The IFF systems in Perfect Dark are found in AutoGuns, Robots and Tracking systems in some firearms. So visually simplified, especially on counter-operative mode, when a Autogun spots the player working against the 'Jo' player, it will not turn to attack, but if the 'Jo' player is spotted by the gun, it will open fire upon him/her. Also, the aiming reticule will turn blue when targeting a neutral/friendly or red when targeting an enemy.
  • Identification of Friend or Foe (otherwise known as IFF) is a system used by the UNSC to tag friendly or hostile units for easy identification on a Heads-up display or motion sensor. The equipment of a friendly unit generates a signal on a specific frequency, which is interpreted as a "friendly" signal by the receiver. If a signal is not generated, then unit is tagged as a hostile. Friendly units appear as yellow dots on the motion sensor, while the crosshairs of a HUD turn green when pointed at them. Hostile units show up as red on a motion sensor, and the HUD crosshairs turn red.
  • IFF is an acronym meaning Identification Friend or Foe. A transponder-based system of aircraft identification, used to distinguish friendly craft from enemy craft. The system essentially uses a "Question and Answer" routine between one aircraft and another. A correct response leads to the questioned aircraft being identified as friendly. In this respect, IFF can be considered a Challenge-response Authentication system. The interrogation process is undertaken automatically, with no direct pilot / operator intervention necessary.

Hostile units show up as red on a motion sensor, and the HUD crosshairs turn red. In the Halo 2 level, Gravemind, John-117 managed to rescue five UNSC prisoners of war. This was due to Cortana identifying their "IFF Transponders," which were still with the Marines. Most UNSC ships, ranging from civilian Freighters to UNSC Navy warships, possess IFF transponders displaying their identity, allegiance, and classification.

IFF systems can also be incorporated into missile and or defence systems, thus preventing them from firing on / acquiring "friendly" targets. IFF transponders may also be fitted to civilian aircraft for the same reason. Colonial civilian and military ships, such as Vipers, also have transponders. The civilian ships likely use civilian transponders used for commercial passenger flight.

Also, the aiming reticule will turn blue when targeting a neutral/friendly or red when targeting an enemy. Perfect Dark's combat simulator hints extensive flexibility of the IFF system in the Laptop Gun, when players and simulants are shuffled in a team and one of the team-members throws a wallgun or uses a tracking system in a firearm then it will ignore all other team-members, even if some were originally in a different team.
