  • Laird Milton McKilty is a character who appeared in the Season 9 episode "Phantom Bagpiper". He is a ghost who resides in the ruins of a castle in Scotland who watches over a pair of ponies while trying to scare away those who would dare to take his ponies away, particularly his nefarious neighbor Frugal McDougal. He has a habit of making parts of himself disappear and reappear, sometimes at will and sometimes involuntarily when he's dealing with a problem, and carries with him a bagpipe which he uses to make the ponies go faster. In the story, McKilty encounters the Smurfs when they first visit the castle to see who lives there, at first believing that they were trespassers and pony poachers, but when his pony Cassie was stolen by McDougal, he got help from Smurfette and the rest of the Smurfs to get her back. By having the Smurfs challenge McDougal to a horse race with Scotty as the prize, McKilty bought enough time to train a Smurf to be a horse jockey that can compete against McDougal, and that horse jockey turned out to be Smurfette. Although McKilty did not watch the race to see who would end up winning, the Smurfs remembered what he did to make his horses run faster and so had Smoogle imitate the sound of the bagpipe while running alongside Smurfette to give Scotty a boost in speed in a few instances. Smurfette and Scotty soon won the race, and McDougal was so upset at his loss that he tried to go back on his word to set Cassie and the two Smurfs he had captured free, only to change his mind when his relatives expressed their disgust at his unsportsmanlike behavior. McKilty was so pleased that the Smurfs had won the race and brought back both horses to him that he invited them all to his castle for "a spirit-raising celebration".
