He played mostly for the Hartford Wolf Pack, winning the Calder Cup in 2000. He also played in 28 games for the Rangers over three seasons (1998 to 2001). In mid-season 2000-01, he was claimed on waivers by the Montreal Canadiens, playing 26 games for them that season. In 2001 Witehall returned to Europe, playing for teams in Germany, Switzerland, and his native Sweden. He retired in 2006. In 54 NHL games, Witehall scored 2 goals and 5 assists.
