Fitzgerald played twenty-five games in the National Hockey League with the Penguins in the 1994–95 and 1995–96 seasons. He scored two goals and two assists. In 1996 training camp he suffered a knee injury that kept him out of the 1995-96 and most of the 1996-97 seasons. He came back in 1997 with the Cleveland Lumberjacks. In 2000-01 he won the John Cullen Award (comeback player of the year) with the Manitoba Moose. Fitzgerald played two more seasons, mostly in Germany, and then retired in 2003.
