Of course, as a young child he always wanted to be called that way, if he would ever become an artist. But because of the humiliation from his (f)art project, he hid his identity under the band name Jamiroquai (no 'boo boo' for 'Jay Jay'). Despite of his masochistic music, the band sold over 25 million albums world-wide. Around 24 million albums were bought by Jay Jay alone.

The original line-up included Jay Kay (vocals), Toby Smith (keyboard), Stuart Zender (bass), Nick Van Gelder (drums), Wallis Buchanan (didgeridoo), and Alec Moran (pipeau), though as of 2011 the only original members left are Jay Kay and Derrick Mc Kenzie (drummer circa 1994). The band was formed after Jay Kay's unsuccessful attempt to become the lead singer of fellow Nineties jazz/soul band The Brand New Heavies. Jamiroquai has released seven studio albums, the latest of which was released in October 2010.

Nacido en Londres, Jamiroquai supuso una actualización y puesta al día del funk en los años noventa del s. XX. El nombre "Jamiroquai" surge de la unión del nombre de la tribu indígena norteamericana de los iroqueses, con la cual Kay dice identificarse mentalmente, y el término Jam, proveniente de la palabra jamming, improvisación musical.1 Hasta el momento la banda ha logrado vender más de cuarenta millones de álbumes en todo el mundo2 y ha ganado numerosos premios como el Grammy,3 Brit award y MTV Video Music Award.
