  • Super Smash Bros. Melee was also the launching point for Fire Emblem characters Marth and Roy around the world. Prior to Super Smash Bros. Melee, Fire Emblem was not very well known in places other than Japan. The inclusion of these two characters in such a popular game brought a large amount of interest into Fire Emblem, and from this numerous Fire Emblem games have now been released. There is a large community of advanced Super Smash Bros. Melee players who utilize techniques that casual players may not even know about, such as Wave dashing and L-Cancelling. There is even a school that helps players play the game more professionally, according to the TV show Game Head on Spike TV.

The game is centered on characters from Nintendo's video gaming franchises such as Mario, Pokémon, and The Legend of Zelda. The stages and gameplay modes make references to, or take their designs from, popular games released by Nintendo. Melee's gameplay system offers an unorthodox approach to the "fighter" genre as percentage counters measure the level of damage received, rather than the health bar traditionally seen in most fighting games. It builds on the first game's broad appeal by adding new features related to gameplay and playable characters. Following the popularity of its multiplayer gameplay, Melee has been featured in several multiplayer gaming tournaments. The game received a generally positive reception from the media, as well as awards and acknowledgements from gaming publications. It achieved strong sales upon release, and is the GameCube's best-selling game, with more than seven-million copies sold as of March 10, 2008.

Melee is the first game in the series to include Ice Climber representation by featuring the Ice Climbers as playable characters and a moving stage called Icicle Mountain located on Infinite Glacier. Other things include trophies and a cameo from Polar Bears and Topis in Adventure Mode, and the Condor in the Target Test.
