However, for the monks, the cost is worth it because they believe that the act of flight brings them ever closer to their god and as such they will spare no expense to reach the absolute pinnacle of this level. They aren’t seen as war machines so much as they are works of art meant to appeal to their god. It is due to these religious reasons that they prefer starfighters to larger ships as flying is a very personal experience to the Linshi, akin to a form of meditation. They believe this so strongly that their navy is comprised mainly of starfighters, with most of their few capital ship designs, such as the Ascension-class Carrier, meant only to support and work in tandem with the starfighters. The Mark M is the latest in a long line of Chosen-class Fighters, originating with the Mark I, which was developed soon after the founding of Lin’La’Se millennia ago. The Chosen Fighter’s primary mission is to protect Lin’La’Se territory and clear it of all hostile craft. To do so, it is equipped with a pair of heavy laser cannons which are capable of punching through non-capital ship scale shields relatively quickly. The starfighter also has two secondary blaster cannons to destroy targets too maneuverable for the laser cannons (such as missiles) or to perform otherwise delicate firing operations. One of the biggest prices the Chosen pays for being so fast and deadly is that it has about half the operational time of other fighters. There is comparatively little room to store fuel on a Chosen Fighter, necessitating that they return to resupply. For this reason, Lin’La’Se tends to send their fighters out in staggered groups of three or four at a time, rather than in full 12 starfighter squadrons, so that they always have plenty of fighters on the battlefield while another group is refueling. Only the most skilled members of the Linshi are ever allowed the privilege of flying a Chosen, giving the dangerous craft a well-deserved and intimidating reputation.
