abstract | - The Variable Geometry Self-Propelled Battle Droid/aquatic, or Albatross droid amphi-fighter, was a model of flying battle droid used by the Confederacy of Independent Systems for aquatic battles. They had the basic design of Vulture Droids, but were modified to be able to float on their connected wings while in water. They had thicker wings with more robust repulsorlifts and stabilizing hydrofoils. The energy torpedo charger and some of the engine was removed to make room for anti-submarine depth charges and underwater scanners. The blaster cannons on the wings were spread out so they could fire when the wings were closed. Some droids were fitted with aquatic torpedoes. They would often free fall from an orbiting Confederate Navy capital ship, then let the thrusters and repulsors kick in, and pull up. For water mode, the droid would simply close its wings, fold them down, extend the hydrofoils and ease off the repulsorlifts. It could also walk on land, like the Vulture Droid. Since the engines were weaker and the craft was heavier, the Albatross Droid was less maneuverable than its droid starfighter counterparts. However, it was still a smaller target than the Republic's ARC-170s. These amphibious vehicles were quite effective if given a proper escort, and were much smaller and more maneuverable in water than most ships used by the Republic and other factions, as shown in the Battle of Leziquk. Following the execution of the Separatist Council by Darth Sidious's new apprentice, Darth Vader, these units were de-activated.
