The game boasts a large lineup of characters from Capcom and SNK's fighting game franchises, mainly Street Fighter and The King of Fighters, and contains four console-exclusive bonus characters: Evil Ryu, Riot Iori, Shin Akuma (Shin Gouki in Japan), and Ultimate Rugal (God Rugal in Japan) powered-up versions of four regular characters. Shin Akuma and Ultimate Rugal are the boss fighters, and display tactics typical of bosses from SNK Playmore's fighting games.

It's a crossover of both Capcom and SNK franchises, a sequel of a game released in 2000, the fourth collaboration between the two companies, and the Capcom's nineth. Within the four systems that the game was launched, two of them got the EO in the title (one of them being the GameCube version), standing for Easy Operation; This is reflected in the game options, before choosing a team of fighters, you can select the ISMs (as seen in Street Fighter Alpha 3), with the GC-ISM simplifying the commands for the GameCube Controller layout; While the default option (AC-ISM), keeps the six button input as in the Arcade.
