After Mewt brings a mysterious book to Marche's house, Marche is magically transported to another world called Ivalice as he sleeps. When he wakes up, he accidentally runs into a Bangaa, which he makes the mistake of calling him a "Lizard" leading to his first engagement, or battle. Montblanc, a moogle, takes him in to his clan and even lets him name it. He is an innocent character, and even a bit naive at times, but has a strong sense of justice.

Dort angekommen, begegnen Ritz und Mewt Doned. Gemeinsam schlagen sie das Buch auf, verstehen aber die darin befindliche Sprache nicht. Dennoch murmelt Mewt einige Wörter aus dem Buch hervor und spricht so unwissentlich den Gran Grimoire aus. Dadurch verwandelt sich St. Ivalice über Nacht zu Ivalice, einer "Final Fantasy"-ähnlichen Welt. Marche ist verwirrt von der neuen Welt, in die er so unverhofft gestolpert ist, und rempelt aus Versehen einen Bangaa. Er entschuldigt sich zwar bei diesem, nennt ihn dabei aber Echse. Diese Bezeichnung gilt unter Bangaa als grob fahrlässige Beleidigung, was Marche aber nicht wissen konnte. Aus diesem Dilemma hilft ihm der Moogle Montblanc heraus, der ihn daraufhin in seinem Clan, dem Clan Wirrling, aufnimmt. Marche findet zwar Gefallen an dieser neuen Welt, in der er wie in Final Fantasy kämpfen und zaubern kann; aber er ist der Ansicht, es sei nicht richtig, in Ivalice zu leben, da dies nur eine Traumwelt sei, geschaffen, um den Problemen der täglichen Realität zu entfliehen. Um wieder in das wirkliche St. Ivalice zu gelangen, versucht er fünf Kristalle zu zerstören.
