  • Mediterranean is a land map in Rise of Nations. It is similar to African Watering Hole, only the water at the center is increased and there is an island, useful for strategic purposes, and rare resources are not confined near the water. Computer-controlled nations will never construct navies, although they may sent a citizen or a scout to collect the scarce ruins and rare resources in the central island.

  • The Mediterranean was a sea on Earth, connected to the Atlantic Ocean, and surrounded by southern Europe, northern Africa and western Asia. The aliens who portrayed themselves as the Greek gods settled around the Mediterranean, specifically in what would later be known as Greece, during the 28th century BC. (TOS: "Who Mourns for Adonais?" ) In the novelization of Star Trek: The Motion Picture a political unit located in the region, known as the "Mediterranean Alliance", encompassed at least one former nation-state, Gibraltar, during the 2270s. Admiral Kirk was contacted by Starfleet during an excursion to Gibraltar, which is noted to be a member of this alliance.

The Strait of Gibraltar connects it with the Atlantic Ocean, and the Suez canal connects it to the Red Sea. Many ancient civilisations developed round the Mediterranean. Geologically the Mediterranean is an ocean though it's usually called a sea. Marine life in the Mediterranean is under threat through pollution and overfishing. In the past few Million years the Straits have closed on at least one occasion and as a result the Mediterranean basin largely dried out. This is unlikely any time soon since Global warming causes sea levels to rise.
