(TNG: "Night Terrors" ) During development of Star Trek: Insurrection, sarium krellide was temporarily imagined, by Michael Piller, to be a key part of the story, as a replacement for a "fountain of youth" concept which Rick Berman suspected might not meet Patrick Stewart's approval. In an early version of the film's narrative, the substance was rare in a particular star system containing the homeworld of a specific alien species (later named the Ba'ku). However, it was discovered to be in abundance beneath the surface of that planet. When the focus of the plot returned to the fountain-of-youth idea, sarium krellide was initially thought of as causing the regenerative effects, though this notion was ultimately dropped too. (Fade In - The Writing of Star Trek: Insurrection) According to the Star Trek: The Next Generation Technical Manual (p. 134), the maximum energy density of sarium krellide was 1.3x10E6 megajoules per cubic centimeter, leaking less than 1.05 kilojoules per hour.
