He was drafted in the second round, 19th overall, by the Vancouver Canucks in the 1972 NHL Amateur Draft. He played in the National Hockey League with the Canucks and Buffalo Sabres. He played junior with the Oshawa Generals and the Ottawa 67's, scoring 96 points in his last season in Ottawa. McSheffrey played in 87 games in his first two seasons in Vancouver (1972-73 and 1973-74) but only scored 20 points. The disappointed Canucks dealt him to the Buffalo Sabres in 1974 where he had no better luck. In his NHL career, McSheffrey appeared in 90 games. He scored thirteen goals and added seven assists. He finished his professional career by playing two seasons in the Netherlands, where he was very successful: he scored 58 goals and added 66 assists in just 38 games with HYS Intervam. He retired in 1980.
