He played three games in the National Hockey League for the Winnipeg Jets in 1983-84, scoring one assist. He had played for the Michigan Tech Huskies from 1979 to 1983. The Jets had chosen him 135th overall in the 1980 NHL Entry Draft. Lauen played for the American team in the 1980 World Junior Championship. Lauen retired in 1986, mainly because of injuries.
