Before the 17 June 2013 update, you could not catch disturbed implings bare-handed, but needed to be wielding a butterfly net (un-sheathed) and have an impling jar. Implings found using the scrimshaw last 5 minutes before despawning and are only visible to the wearer of the scrimshaw. When an impling appears, the following message is shown in the chatbox: Your scrimshaw has disturbed a(n) [type] impling. The scrimshaw lasts for 3 hours of use, and can be activated and deactivated as desired, except for a minimum activation period of 10 seconds.
