European immigration began shortly after the Dutch East India Company founded a station at what would become Cape Town, in 1652. South Africa is ethnically diverse, with the largest Caucasian, Asian, and racially mixed communities in Africa.

  • South Africa has seen one of the most dramatic transformations of international image and reputation in recent history. Until 1994 the nation was governed under apartheid rule, and was widely condemned internationally for its violation of civil liberties and widespread racial violence. Since becoming fully democratic, however, South Africa has emerged as an international symbol of progress and leadership on the African continent. Building on its political and social transformation, South Africa continues to cultivate an image as a moral and political model for the rest of the Africa, and as a powerful political player in the global realm.

  • South Africa (Officially the Union of South Africa) was an independent African state which existed from 1910 until 1961. Being one of the wealthiest territories on the continent, it eventually developed into a strong white-ruled nation. The Union came into existence on May 30th 1910, the result of merging the Cape, Natal and Transvaal colonies, as well as the Orange Free State. Colonized in the 1600's, the country was settled first by the Dutch, calling themselves Boers or 'farmers'. Around 1900, the British Empire wrested the control of the land from them. Throughout the first half of the 20th century, a rivalry marked by unusually deep hatred drove a rift between the Boer (Afrikaner) settler minority and their fellow South Africans of English descent. Afrikaner statesman Jan Christiaan Smuts was prime minister of the Union of South Africa, then considered a virtual dominion of the British Crown. In 1948, however, the more radically inclined Nationalist Party took control of the nation and began severing ties with Britian. They also implemented the white racial supremacist policy of 'apartheid' (Afrikaans for separation), which led to an anti-South African backlash in the British Commonwealth of Nations. In 1961, the Union of South Africa was abolished and the increasingly isolationist nation declared itself a fully independent republic.
  • South Africa has experienced a different history from other nations in Africa because of early immigration from Europe and the strategic importance of the Cape Sea Route. European immigration began shortly after the Dutch East India Company founded a station at what would become Cape Town, in 1652. The closure of the Suez Canal during the Six-Day War highlighted its significance to East-West trade. The country's relatively developed infrastructure made its mineral wealth available and important to Western interests, particularly throughout the late nineteenth century and, with international competition and rivalry, during the Cold War. South Africa is ethnically diverse, with the largest Caucasian, Asian, and racially mixed communities in Africa. Racial strife between the white minority and the black majority has played a large part in South Africa's history and politics, culminating in apartheid, which was instituted in 1948 by the National Party (although segregation existed before that time). The laws that defined apartheid have continued to grow over the years despite (or because of) a long and sometimes violent struggle by the Black majority as well as many White, Coloured, and Asian South Africans. In 1915 "South West Africa" (Namibia) was taken from Germany during World War I, and declared a League of Nations Mandate under the Treaty of Versailles, with South Africa responsible for its administration. With the fall of the League of Nations following World War II, the Union of South Africa refused to agree to allow the territory to begin any transition to independence as it was essentially considered to be a de facto fifth province of South Africa, even though it was never actually incorporated into the country. South Africa's stance on its ownership to South-West Africa was due to the fact that she governed the territory for decades and had invested a lot of money on its infrastructure and modernization. South Africa also formally excluded Walvis Bay from the mandate and annexed it as a South African exclave. In 1961, the Union of South Africa faced growing friction with the United Kingdom and other Commonwealth nations over the practice of Apartheid. The Republic of South Africa was declared, leaving behind Commonwealth Realm status and South Africa left the Commonwealth of Nations. In 1965, following ongoing border conflicts with Botswana, South Africa declared a full state of war. By the closing months of 1966, all of Botswana was under South African rule. The territory was formally annexed on December 26th of that year. In 1968, facing growing internal problems from the black majority, particularly in the South West Africa and the North Province (formerly Botswana), significant additional laws were created, strengthening Apartheid. Due to heavy economic pressures and the threat of military force, in 1972 both Swaziland and Lesotho were forced into union with South Africa. In the heat of the Cold War in 1973, with South Africa facing constant struggle against the African National Congress and other "communist" groups, roundups of "dangerous" Black South Africans began. The Blacks were placed into large forced labor camps guarded by well-armed, well-trained White soldiers. By 1976, word had begun to reach the world of the "Black Holocaust" in South Africa. Rumors of forced sterilization, biological weapons testing, and worse from the forced labor camps received some confirmation. The government of the Republic of South Africa denied all allegations. By 1978, intelligence reports pointed to a decrease in the more extreme and offensive measures at the forced labor camps following extensive international pressure. The Republic of South Africa refused to end the practice of roundups or work camps, but it seemed clear that more moderation was in use, or counter-intelligence had gotten much better. Still, somewhere between 1 and 2 million Blacks from South Africa were believed to have been killed during the previous 5 years. Communist forces in Madagascar, believed to be strongly supported by the USSR, launched surprise attacks on South Africa in 1982. Cooperating with the African National Congress and other underground forces, numerous insurgent attacks occurred as South Africa mobilized to handle both renewed internal conflict and an external threat. In the early years of 1983, it seemed possible that the Republic of South Africa would be defeated mostly by internal revolts. The President of the Republic authorized extreme counter-insurgent measures, including extermination of entire Black villages for every attack on White South Africans. The heavy-handed tactics bought the South African military enough time to defeat the Madagascar navy and begin heavy, indiscriminate bombardment of the island's cities by the beginning of 1984. By the end of 1984, most of Madagascar was reduced to rubble, it's military destroyed and little remained intact. South Africa formally annexed the island in December of 1984. With the war against Madagascar complete, but still on full war footing, the Republic of South Africa turned its attention to Mozambique and the guerrilla forces that continually crossed the border. Mozambique responded with a full declaration of war. Over the course of ten months, South Africa pulverized the countryside indiscriminately. By the end of 1985, Mozambique had been annexed by South Africa as well. Insurgent forces, particularly in the newly annexed territories, proved to be a constant struggle over the next few years. The governments of Zimbabwe and Zambia gave covert support to the insurgent groups, believing that South Africa would either fall under pressure or prove unable to muster enough force to openly go to war. By the spring of 1988 however, South African forces began an extensive bombing raids into Zimbabwe and Zambia. Support that the two nations had been expecting from the DPRA failed to materialize due to internal conflicts in that nation at the time. By the end of 1988, Zimbabwe had been annexed by South Africa. The Zambia, however, joined the United Central African federation, two days before South Africa declared war on Zimbabwe,South Africa did not go into war with the United Central African federation, and the Zambia escaped South African annex.
  • The Republic of South Africa is the country at the southern tip of Africa. Between 1948 and 1994, the country was locked in the grip of a system of legalized racial segregation. The Teen Titan Starfire once made a journey to South Africa and became involved in the Apartheid political atmosphere when she was framed for the murder of a peace activist named Father Mandutu.
  • South Africa first participated at the Olympic Games in 1904, and sent athletes to compete in every Summer Olympic Games until 1960. After the passage of United Nations General Assembly Resolution 1761 in 1962 in response to South Africa's policy of apartheid, the nation was barred from the Games. (This did not, however, apply to the Paralympics. South Africa made its Paralympic Games début in 1964, and continued to compete until 1976, included, after which the Dutch Parliament declared its participation in the 1980 Summer Games would be undesirable. From then on, South Africa was absent from the Paralympics until 1992. See: South Africa at the Paralympics.) After the negotiations to end apartheid in South Africa commenced in 1990, the nation was allowed to rejoin the Olympic movement. The South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee was created in 1991, and South Africa returned to the Games at the 1992 Summer Olympics (and the 1992 Summer Paralympics). South Africa also participated in the Winter Olympic Games in 1960, and since 1994. South African athletes have won a total of 73 medals, with athletics, boxing, and swimming as the top medal-producing sports. The most recent Medal was won by the Men's Lightweight Four Rowing Team of Sizwe Ndlovu, Matthew Brittain, John Smith and James Thompson on 2 August 2012 at the 2012 London Olympics.

As part of a 350.org project titled "eARTh BIG Pictures - Climate Art Visible from Space," the Canary Project and local Cape Town citizens created an enormous solar sun out of 70 parabolic solar cookers with the “rays” being on-the-ground tables where the local community will feast on traditional food made in the solar cookers. The solar cookers will be donated to the Khayelitsha community of Cape Town where many people do not have access to electricity. Each cooker lasts for 10 years and requires no fossil fuels, saving money for families while also protecting their health and the environment. * November 2010: Cooking your food with the sun in South Africa, November 27th, 2010 Imagine if you used the sun to cook your food instead of using electricity or gas? Well, in the sunny, balmy climate of Cape Town, South Africa they are doing just that! On November 27, 2010, 1,000 people will sit down for a meal together that will be cooked exclusively with solar cookers. But before the community sits down to feast they will engage in an intergalactic photo shoot. They will create the above image out of the solar cookers and will have a 59-second window where the design will be photographed from a passing satellite. People all over the world are joining this event in South Africa by donating $150 to buy a large solar for this event and as a permanent solution to carbon reduction in the Khayelitsha neighborhood of Cape Town. It will be a convoy of knowledge, experience, and partnerships in the area of sustainable household and community technologies and practices. The Caravan will start in Mozambique, to eventually cover most of Southern Africa. Far from relying on the knowledge and resources of a few, the Caravan will link experts, product suppliers, communities, and funders. Starting in August 2010, a core team of 4 people from 3 countries will start travelling from Johannesburg, South Africa, towards Beira, Mozambique. In each community the Caravan visits, its members will be presented with a flexible curriculum of applied introductory workshops and demonstrations about the core topics and technologies. One fixed workshop module concerns clean energy; another food security, waste management and nutrition. To learn more, see how your experience may be of value, and offer financial support see: Solar Cookers for Africa: Solar Caravan 2010 * July 2010: Five Rotary-based organizations have joined forces to introduce solar cooking principles in South African townships, helping to alleviate poverty and improve health. The project will bring solar cooking to townships in Cape Town, and five hundred miles to the east, in Grahamstown. The Rotary Club of Fresno, in , has been promoting solar cooker technology, using designs that are easy and cheap to make, produce no carbon emissions, avoid firewood collection and burning, and are healthier to use than conventional cooking and water-sanitizing methods. Wendi Hammond and Patti Thornton from the Rotary Club of Fresno, California, both expert trainers in solar cooking, have travelled to South Africa this past spring as volunteer trainers for the Sustainability Trust-sponsored solar cooking project. The Soweto Solar Cooker project involves the installation of 18 solar cookers at the Mapetla old age home, home to many women belonging to the SOWETO ANC women's veterans league, which has been an influential body throughout the history of the struggle against apartheid in South Africa. More information. * November 2007: SunFire Solutions, a solar cooker promotion and development agency based in Johannesburg, teamed up with Umgungundlovu District Municipality in June 2006 to install 20 of its SunFire 14 parabolic solar cookers in Masihambisane as part of an off-grid electrification pilot project. Masihambisane is a small village situated in a Tribal Authority area 80 kilometers north of Pietermaritzburg, beyond the sugar cane plantations. The community was selected because of its remoteness and suitability for off-grid electrification. According to SunFire representative Crosby Menzies, the response was amazing. “A marked and definite improvement in living standards was immediately noticed,” he said. “The overall … response from families included in this project was a unanimous vote of confidence, and thanks for the opportunity to use solar cookers.” In December 2006 SunFire returned to install 60 more solar cookers. A visit in early 2007 confirmed the cookers’ usefulness to the community and provided opportunities for the new solar cooks to get additional training and have questions answered. One woman cooked her family’s entire Christmas meal on her new SunFire 14 and was very proud of not needing to light a fire on Christmas day, as this meant not needing to wash the smell of smoke from her family’s clothes. Early adopters of the solar cookers were predominantly from the younger generation, ages 14-24. Since they do much of the firewood collecting, they immediately recognized the benefits of cookers powered only by the sun. SunFire hopes this project will lead to further support from the South African government, as is the case in a few other countries like India and China. SunFire produces parabolic solar cookers in Johannesburg, and has recently founded a non-governmental organization called Solar Cookers for Africa to help poor African families throughout southern Africa gain access to solar cooker technology. * June 2007: Crosby Menzies of SunFire Solutions sends a report on the Masihambisane Solar Cooker Project.

  • South Africa, officially the Republic of South Africa (Afrikaans: Republiek van Suid-Afrika, Zulu: iRiphabliki yaseNingizimu Afrika, Xhosa: iRiphabliki yaseMzantsi Afrika, Tsonga: Riphabliki yaAfrika Dzonga, Northern Sotho and Southern Sotho: Rephaboliki ya Afrika Borwa, Tswana: Rephaboliki ya Aforika Borwa, Ndebele: IRiphabliki yeSewula Afrika, Swati: IRiphabhulikhi yeNingizimu Afrika, Venda: Riphabuliki ya Afurika Tshipembe), is a country located at the southern tip of the African continent. It borders Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Swaziland, and Lesotho (an independent enclave surrounded by South African territory). South Africa is a member of the Commonwealth of Nations. South Africa has experienced a different history from other nations in Africa as a result of two facts. Firstly, early immigration from Europe that started shortly after the Dutch East India Company founded a station at (what was to become) Cape Town in 1652. Early and later European interest followed from the second fact, the strategic importance of the Cape Sea Route. The closure of the Suez Canal during the Six Day War exemplifies its significance. The country's relatively developed infrastructure made its mineral wealth available and important to Western interests, particularly throughout the late nineteenth century; then, with international competition and rivalry during the Cold War. South Africa is an ethnically diverse nation. It has the largest white, Indian, and racially-mixed communities in Africa. Black South Africans, who speak nine officially-recognized languages and many more dialects, account for slightly less than 80% of the population. Racial strife between the white minority and the black majority has played a large part in the country's history and politics, culminating in apartheid, which was instituted in 1948 by the National Party (although segregation existed prior to that date). The laws that defined apartheid began to be repealed or abolished by the National Party in 1990 after a long and sometimes violent struggle (including economic sanctions from the international community) by the Black majority as well as many White, Coloured, and Indian South Africans. Two philosophies originated in South Africa: ubuntu (the belief in a universal bond of sharing that connects all humanity); and Gandhi's notion of "passive resistance" (satyagraha), developed while he lived in South Africa. Regular elections have been held for almost a century; however, the majority of black South Africans were not enfranchised until 1994. The economy of South Africa is the largest and best developed on the continent, with modern infrastructure common throughout the country. South Africa hosted and won the 1996 African Cup of Nations. South Africa is often referred to as "The Rainbow Nation", a term coined by Archbishop Desmond Tutu and later adopted by then-President Nelson Mandela. President Mandela used the term "Rainbow Nation" as a metaphor to describe the country's newly-developing multicultural diversity in the wake of segregationist apartheid ideology. The country's socially progressive policies are rare in Africa. By 2007, the country had joined Belgium, the Netherlands, Spain, and Canada in legalising same-sex marriage. South Africa will be the host nation for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. It will be the first time the tournament is held in Africa. It will also host the first ever Twenty20 World Championship in September 2007.

  • The first film studio in South Africa, Killarney Film Studios, was established in 1915 in Johannesburg. During the 1910s and 1920s, many South African films were made in or around Durban. These films often made use of the dramatic scenery available in rural KwaZulu-Natal, particularly the Drakensberg region. KwaZulu-Natal was also served as the appropriate location for historical films. Sarie Marais, the first Afrikaans-language sound film, was released in 1931. Subsequent sound releases such as Die Wildsboudjie (1948), a 1949 Sarie Marais remake, and Daar doer in die bosveld (1950) continued to cater primarily to white, Afrikaans-speaking audiences. The 1950s saw an increased use of South African locations and talent by international filmmakers. British co-productions like Coast of Skeletons (1956) and American co-productions like The Cape Town Affair (1957) reflected the a growing trend of shooting in real locations, rather than using backlots.

To the north lie the neighbouring countries of Namibia, Botswana, and Zimbabwe; to the east are Mozambique and Swaziland; within it lies Lesotho, an enclave surrounded by South African territory. South Africa is the 25th-largest country in the world by land area, and with close to 53 million people, is the world's 24th-most populous nation. South Africa is a multiethnic society encompassing a wide variety of cultures, languages, and religions. Its pluralistic makeup is reflected in the constitution's recognition of 11 official languages, which is among the highest number of any country in the world. Two of these languages are of European origin: English and Afrikaans, the latter originating from Dutch and serving as the main language of most white and coloured South Africans. Though English is commonly used in public and commercial life, it is only the fifth most-spoken home language.

  • Dutch traders landed at the southern tip of modern day South Africa in 1652 and established a stopover point on the spice route between the Netherlands and the Far East, founding the city of Cape Town. After the British seized the Cape of Good Hope area in 1806, many of the Dutch settlers (the Boers) trekked north to found their own republics. The discovery of diamonds (1867) and gold (1886) spurred wealth and immigration and intensified the subjugation of the native inhabitants. The Boers resisted British encroachments but were defeated in the Boer War (1899-1902); however, the British and the Afrikaners, as the Boers became known, ruled together beginning in 1910 under the Union of South Africa, which became a republic in 1961 after a whites-only referendum. In 1948, the National Party was voted into power and instituted a policy of apartheid - the separate development of the races - which favored the white minority at the expense of the black majority. The African National Congress (ANC) led the opposition to apartheid and many top ANC leaders, such as Nelson MANDELA, spent decades in South Africa's prisons. Internal protests and insurgency, as well as boycotts by some Western nations and institutions, led to the regime's eventual willingness to negotiate a peaceful transition to majority rule. The first multi-racial elections in 1994 brought an end to apartheid and ushered in majority rule under an ANC-led government. South Africa since then has struggled to address apartheid-era imbalances in decent housing, education, and health care. ANC infighting, which has grown in recent years, came to a head in September 2008 when President Thabo MBEKI resigned, and Kgalema MOTLANTHE, the party's General-Secretary, succeeded him as interim president. Jacob ZUMA became president after the ANC won general elections in April 2009.

  • South Africa was the home of the time-traveling Afrikaner Weerstandsbeweging organization. Their tampering with history allowed the Confederate States to win the Second American Revolution in 1864. However, their head-on confrontation with Robert E. Lee after the war foiled their ultimate aim in this interference - i.e. to create a history in which South Africa would remain white-ruled.
