PTSD sufferers have increased awareness, often causing them to lose emotional control in any stressful situation, and to be over-vigilant at almost all times. They almost always have difficulty sleeping due to dreams that cause them to re-live their traumatic experiences. Treatment is difficult and often unsuccessful. Psychotherapy, although it gives relief in many cases, often results in the patient dwelling more over the experience, increasing their anxiety. Moreover, anti-anxiety medications, although they lessen the symptoms, have adverse side effects and do nothing for the underlying condition. Most patients have extreme difficulty dealing with normal social situations and often find themselves either homeless, isolated, or institutionalized. Tuffass, a Gand Gunnery Sergeant with the Republic Marines, developed post-traumatic stress disorder shortly after the Battle of Yavin 4, during the Great Sith War. The disorder stemmed from his injuries, which he was almost dismembered by a Massassi warrior during battle. Afterward, he suffered flashbacks and his personality shifted; he was more edgy and irritable and handled stress with more aggression. Tuffass refused treatment for the disorder and instead chose to cope through meditation and exercise. As the Gand grew older, the severity of the symptoms began to subside. A former Rodian bounty hunter, Camilla Sookanado, also developed post-traumatic stress disorder, which stemmed from a past hunt that had ended in her imprisonment on a nameless planet in the Outer Rim Territories. The disorder manifested in severe depression, paranoia, and states of psychogenic fugue. Due to the severity of the disorder, Camilla was forced to retire from bounty hunting. The condition was blamed for her parole violation in 26 ABY, in which Camilla spent six months of an eighteen-month sentence in the Bedacus-Lambrecht Correctional Facility on Coruscant.
