The Montreal Canadiens chose him 46th overall in the 1972 NHL Amateur Draft. In 1978-79 Gilbert made a one-season comeback with the Cincinnati Stingers. In the NHL Gilbert scored 21 goals and 31 assists in 166 games.

A slow start in 1975-76 got him a trade to the Pittsburgh Penguins. Gilbert could not get his game back and he retired in 1977. In 1978-79 Gilbert made a one-season comeback with the Cincinnati Stingers. In the NHL Gilbert scored 21 goals and 31 assists in 166 games.
