He also played 29 games in the World Hockey Association for the Cincinnati Stingers. He played junior hockey for the Hamilton Red Wings from 1969 to 1972. The Montreal Canadiens chose him 46th overall in the 1972 NHL Amateur Draft. In 1978-79 Gilbert made a one-season comeback with the Cincinnati Stingers. In the NHL Gilbert scored 21 goals and 31 assists in 166 games.

A slow start in 1975-76 got him a trade to the Pittsburgh Penguins. Gilbert could not get his game back and he retired in 1977. In 1978-79 Gilbert made a one-season comeback with the Cincinnati Stingers. In the NHL Gilbert scored 21 goals and 31 assists in 166 games.
