- At any time there is only a single Avatar, who is the spirit of the world incarnated into human form. When the Avatar dies, the Avatar Spirit is reincarnated into a newborn, who becomes the next Avatar. Each nation has a method of recognizing the new Avatar. Among the Air Nomads, this involved presenting all infants with a selection of toys to play with, and watching for a child that selected four specific toys that had belonged to past Avatars, called the Four Avatar Relics. Traditionally, the child is told of their identity as the Avatar on their sixteenth birthday (although the current Avatar, Aang, was told much earlier than this because of Fire Nation aggression). Avatars also possess the unique ability to use Energybending, though very few Avatars learned this technique, and even fewer have used it. Avatar Aang used it to remove Phoenix King Ozai's Firebending during "Sozin's Comet, Part 4: Avatar Aang". Once the Avatar Masters the Four Elements, namely Air, Water, Earth and Fire, and also Masters the Avatar State he or she is commonly noted to be a 'Fully Realized Avatar'.

Avatars are not inherently bad—in fact, many good characters in fiction are based off of some aspect of the author. Being an author avatar is not a charge in of itself, but changes the meaning and increases the gravity of other charges when they do arise. For example, a character that expresses the author's opinions may not be bad in concept, but it definitely is bad if this character exists ONLY to fulfill the author's shipping wishes as a matchmaker! Most, if not all, Mary Sues have some element of an avatar to them, if they are not self-inserts. Sometimes this is intentional, because the Sue is meant to insert the author's opinions into a continuum. Sometimes this is unintentional, because many Mary Sues are not aware that they are actually just spouting the opinions of the writer rather than being their own developed person. In a worst-case scenario, Mary Sue avatar characters are aware that they are in a story, and will begin to change the canon as they see fit. They can and often will give themselves special powers beyond what a Mary Sue trying to 'fit in' would dare to possess. []

- An Avatar is the incarnation of deity in Hinduism. In Hinduism, the term has come to refer mostly - but not exclusively - to the various forms taken by Vishnu, but in popular culture and in terms of fantasy tropes, the term has come to mean any physical form taken on by a non-corporeal being. The same concept in other religions is usually described with the more generalized term "Incarnation". Because of the fantasy nature of the setting, the term Avatar will be used for incarnations in general. The belief in such incarnations was usually quite manifest - acctual people were seen as incarnated deities - for example, ancient egyptian Pharaos were sometimes seen as incarnations of Horus and Ra and Christianity is centered around the belief that Jesus Christ was an avatar of God (although the term used would be "incarnation"). In other cases, such as the ancient roman imperial cult, mortals were not incarnations of pre-existing deities, but rather ascended to godhood in popular religion after their death. In other cases, such as the Emperor of Japan, they were said to trace their descent to a deity, without being an incarnation of that deity. Only the first case is of concern to this article. In Random Kingdom, the term is used to denote any form taken by deities, essentially metaphysic entities. While it is possible to fight deities in Random Kingdom under certain circumstances, even the defeat of a deity means simply the end of the avatar, not of the deity, which may reform. First, the nature of such an incarnation needs to be established. We need to distinguish between two types of "avatarism" - first, the type where a being manifests without using any pre-existing biological process. The second type, which was the one historically most believed in, was that the "spirit" of the incarnating being is born inside a child (or other species' young). Note that the first type was propably more frequently believed in, but the various forms in which deities were believed to have appeared when manifesting in the non-biological way are mostly not as complex as a human being, and if they were, they were not actually witnessed by alot of people, but rather passed on as legend. For example, the burning bush of the Bible. We can assume that God is not a burning bush. So his manifestation in that form could be interpreted as an avatar created through non-biological means. However, few people (just Moses) have actually seen that bush, and heard it speak. Let us stick with the biological incarnation mechanism for now. What actually gets "incarnated"? Memory of the pre-incarnated divine self is a possibility - Jesus certainly did remember who he was - but not a necessity, at least in terms of fantasy tropes. The same arguments as for Reincarnation seem to apply to Incarnation too. Likewise, power is not a prerequisite - Jesus apparently had access to the full powers of God, but he choose not to use them, and in many other cases. Of course, this can both be gradual - an avatar/incarnation may have a fragment of the deity's powers and fragment of memory - perhaps only a general motivation to accomplish a certain deed which was the reason of the incarnation. It appears that the prerequisite is that something like an "essence" of a being exists - a 'soul' that confers certain traits from incarnation to incarnation - again the same argument as for reincarnation - indepedent of both genes, epigenetics, nurture or any other form of transfer of behavioural patterns from parent to child (in Jesus' case, this was special because he God also is his father, according to mainstream christianity). This essence maybe modulated by the nature and experiences of the being one incarnates as, but it is a prerequisite to something incarnating at all. For example: simply remembering the previous human life when the deity returns to its divine state, that is, the avatar really is nothing but a human agent that observes or gathers information, or may even actually have special powers or be psychologically inclined in certain ways desired by the deity, does not make an avatar. Memories being reabsorbed into the main deity upon death/some absorption process make it seem close to incarnation, but still is not. Essence is prerequisite. In this respect, also study the articles about reincarnating Demons. We also need to distinguish avatarism from the deity itself. Not every presence of a deity in the physical world is an avatar - it may actually be the deity itself. A certain position - held in Random Kingdom as well - holds that indeed all living beings are fragment incarnations of God. Sometimes, this is even extended to inanimate matter and generally everything contained in this and all other universes (Monism). The view that everyone is an incarnation of God seems at first to be hard to reconcile with Christianity. In Christianity, Jesus is both the son of God, and "God in the flesh". If everyone was an incarnation of God, then would not everyone be like Jesus? However, Jesus says that whoever does the will of his father in heaven (God) is to him a brother or sister. This is to be understood quite literally! Even the central prayer of Christianity, the Lord's Prayer, begins with "Our Father in heaven..." (Matthew) or simply "Father" (Luke). Now, of course, simply being the son of someone does not make you an incarnation of that person (or does it? at least for unilateral descent, that's a quite interesting possibility to pursue. Now imagine genetic memory, etc), so the argument is not 100% proof. However, it does open the possibility that people can not only descend from God in the 'downward' fashion (from God to earth), but also in the 'upward' fashion - becoming God's children through Christ in a quite literal meaning. Of course now, Jesus had miracle powers (according to Christianity, and bear with me for a minute here, we're still looking at the belief system in-character), which even followers do not actually have. Some modern-day evangelists would beg to differ here but its somewhat safe to assume that no current-day christian has powers anywhere near those Jesus displayed according to the bible, right?
* Not every 'son' is identical - you don't necessarily have superpowers even if your relationship with God is the same.
* Now, as discussed above, "son" does not mean "identical" - the difference could be because Jesus is God as he's God's son in the 'downward' fashion; the others are in the 'upward' fashion, so do not have powers, although the bible says they would have some powers (drive out demons, etc., at least in the case of the apostles)
* However, and this opens up the whole issue of Psionics, In turn, whatever other deity or immaterial being or concept someone is an incarnation of is in turn also an incarnation of God.
* In a way, it can be argued that indeed all beings are incarnations of one divine presence. As per designer, the difference is a gradual one in terms of morality.
* Reverse incarnation may also be possible. As we generalized the plane on which a being can incarnate - that is, we unlinked it from incarnating on the "prime material", that is Earth/our universe, we need to differentiate between a deity itself and the avatar. While it appears that every occurence of a deity would be an avatar when speaking about that deity making an appearance in the 'prime material' - in other words, Fenrir couldn't appear in any RP without being an avatar of himself - this doesn't feel right. We need to redefine via traits when manifesting, not simply the fact that its a deity appearing in the prime. The difference could be 'lack of birth' for true deity manifestations. This is necessitated because in a fantasy setting, unlike in history, but like in eschatology or mythology, gods may appear in the prime frequently.

- As part spirit, the Avatar possesses an innate connection to the Spirit World and is at their strongest in that realm, due to being surrounded by spiritual energy. The Avatar used that connection to the Spirit World to be the bridge between the two worlds in order to keep peace between them and ensure harmony. After the Harmonic Convergence in 171 AG, however, Avatar Korra left the spirit portals open and renounced her role as the bridge between the two worlds to let humans and spirits live together in harmony. The Avatar is also capable of recalling memories from past lives. This ability, however, can be injured or even completely severed. Avatar Aang unintentionally weakened his connection to all his past lives who came before Avatar Roku when he broke off his relationship with the Fire Nation Avatar, though he managed to restore the connection. When Raava was ripped out of Avatar Korra by Vaatu and subsequently destroyed, Korra's link to her past lives via Raava was completely severed despite the light spirit's revival. Each nation has a method of recognizing the new Avatar. Among the Air Nomads, this involved presenting infants with a selection of toys and watching for a child that selected the exact four that had belonged to past Avatars, called the Avatar relics. Traditionally, the child is told of their identity as the Avatar on their sixteenth birthday, though Avatar Aang was told at age twelve, in fear of an impending war due to the Fire Nation's growing aggression, and Korra was discovered as the Avatar, exhibited bending abilities beyond her native waterbending without formal training, when she was just four years old. The Avatar also possesses the ability to bend energy itself, although few Avatars have learned this technique, and even fewer have used it. Avatar Aang learned it from the last living lion turtle and used it to remove Phoenix King Ozai's firebending, ending the Hundred Year War. He later used it to end Yakone's reign of terror in Republic City by stripping him of his waterbending. Korra was also taught this ability after connecting with Aang when she lost her bending. Aang used this ability to restore her bending and she likewise did the same for Lin Beifong and many other victims of Amon's unique technique. Upon mastering control of the Avatar State, after having learned to bend the four elements, an Avatar is referred to as "fully realized".

- The time and place is Egypt, 1898. A young boy brings a lantern to a young explorer. He is lowered into a temple and searches through the artifacts. Suddenly, a doorway starts to glow with light. The rope is suddenly pulled in with such force that it takes several men to pull it back up. When it is pulled back up, only a burned frayed end is retrieved. The explorer is nowhere to be found. Back in the present, Lucius Fox commends Bruce on his donating several Egyptian artifacts to the museum. Amongst these artifacts is half of the Scroll of Osiris: the oldest Egyptian document currently known. Later that night, a thief sneaks in and steals the scroll. However, Batman arrives and confronts the thief. Stopping the thief is easy enough but Batman is shocked to see that it's Ubu. Ra's al Ghul then reveals himself and throws an Egyptian cobra at Batman. The cobra bites him injecting him with poison. Batman barely has time to save himself with an anti-venom while Ra's and Ubu escape. Back at the Batcave, Batman looks up the snake venom and talks to Alfred about the incident. Unfortunately, there's not much information to lead to Ra's so Batman heads out to Gibraltar to find his daughter, Talia. Talia is shocked to learn that her father is alive and that he didn't try to contact her. Bruce is sure that it's Ra's and wants to know why he's so interested in the scroll. Talia explains that the scroll is part of a map and Ra's has the other half. The map leads to the tomb of the Egyptian queen Thoth Khepera and Ra's has been obsessed with finding it. She doesn't know why he's after the tomb but Batman decides he has to go after him anyway. Talia agrees to help and takes Batman to a hidden sanctuary in Cairo. Talia and Bruce walk into a shop and using an ultrasound radar, they find their way into the secret entrance. However, the shop owner finds them and he and a couple thugs detain the duo. They are dealt with easily enough and the couple heads down. There they find the completed scroll and a translation. However, Ra's stops them from getting the scroll and explains that Thoth Kephera had power over life and death. He now seeks to have that power for himself. His explanation done, Ra's traps both Batman and Talia in a glass case with no air supply. Batman tries his best to break out but the glass is too strong. Talia gives up but Batman uses his sonar device to break the glass with sound vibrations. Now free, the duo decides to do what must be done. Batman and Talia make their way to the tomb and climb in. However, Ra's watches their actions from afar. Inside the temple, they find the queen's sarcophagus but Ra's arrives and has Ubu open the coffin. Inside are scrolls that are so old they crumble under Ra's hands. Batman and Talia take the opportunity to escape leaving Ra's to despair. However, while the duo deals with Ra's thugs, Ra's finds a hidden lever that opens a passageway under the coffin. Inside, Ra's finds several skeletons surrounding a green pool that contains Thoth Kephera who promises the knowledge of the power of the gods if Ra's will join her. She then hypnotizes him and lures him in. She kisses Ra's and starts to suck the life from his body. Fortunately, Batman and Talia arrive and stop Thoth from finishing Ra's off. Outraged, Thoth summons the magic from her pool and tries to take Talia. Batman saves her and tries to kill Thoth with a grenade but it's ineffective. The trio manages to escape, however, and Batman shoves a statue of Osiris over smashing Thoth and causing the temple to collapse. Ubu is almost killed in the collapse but Batman saves him. Furthermore, Ra's is restored to normal. With Thoth gone, the group heads out and Ra's re-accepts Talia as his daughter. However, when she sees that Ra's is tied up and learns that Batman intends to take him to the authorities she turns on Batman and takes his horse. She then frees her father and the group leaves after Ubu leaves Batman a canteen. Batman takes the canteen and vows there will be another time.

"Because the trees have some kind of energy, and they communicate with the energy, and this energy will change the world!" "Pah! Who do you think you are, some kind of scientist?" "Yes!" "You think we pay you millions of dollars to tell the truth?" "Yes!" "And you think that because you have a brilliant mind and years of loyal experience that we're going to listen to you?" - A guitar synthesizer created by ARP Instruments, first marketed in 1979. The Avatar was built around the guts of an Odyssey, their popular monophonic performance synth. To this, ARP added an input for a hex pickup, priority circuitry for selecting which string would trigger the synth, a pitch converter for generating the control voltage, a trigger circuit, and an envelope follower for tracking the guitar's dynamics. As a bonus, ARP also put in an effect called hex fuzz, in which each individual string input was put through a distortion circuit and the outputs of those mixed; the hex fuzz had no connection with any of the synth circuitry. Unlike its primary competition, the Roland GR-500, the Avatar did not come with a dedicated guitar; instead it came with a hex pickup which the user could mount on a guitar of their choice. The Avatar made a splash when it was introduced, but the street buzz quickly turned negative. Users soon discovered that the pitch and trigger circuits tracked poorly and could not keep up with fast playing. Wrong notes and missed notes were common. To be fair, some of the problem was caused by users ignoring ARP's advice on what kinds of guitars the synth could be used with; some users mounted the hex pickup on hollow-body guitars, or twelve-strings, or other types of guitars besides the recommended solid-body guitars. However, even when all of the instructions were followed, the synth did not track well. There were also some power supply overheating problems. And because the synth's controls were all mounted on the panel of the Odyssey-like case, it was inconvenient for guitar players to alter patches during or between songs. (The GR-500 had both on-guitar controls on its dedicated guitar, and foot switches on its on-the-floor synth enclosure.) The list price of $3000 (in 1979 dollars!) also hurt. Sales quickly dropped and many of the purchased units were returned for service to try to correct the tracking problems. ARP had invested nearly all of the company's resources in developing the Avatar, and the company was desperately hoping for Avatar sales to replenish the coffers. When that didn't happen, the company quickly fell into financial trouble. Lack of Avatar sales meant that ARP didn't have money to complete the Chroma, which might have saved the company, and ARP was forced into bankruptcy in 1981, about 18 months after the Avatar's introduction. Today the Avatar is moderately sought out by collectors -- but not as a guitar synthesizer. Most performers who have one use it as an expander module or as a substitute for an Odyssey; they ignore the guitar input and instead control the Avatar via its CV/Gate input jacks. The resale value of the Avatar is not that high, so performers who would not dream of altering a highly collectible Odyssey don't mind modding an Avatar.
