  • Clifford T. Reid is a native of Athy, Co. Kildare, Ireland. He was elected Carlow IT students Union president in 1999 followed by being elected to Athy Urban District Council in June 1999. A civil engineering student, he was the youngest councillor ever elected in Athy. He left this post after 3 year and took up a position as a prison officer in Cloverhill prison. Here he became involved in the prison officers association (POA) as a union rep. In 2004 he left his job and ran as an independent candidate in the East constituency for the European elections. His main campaign was to “Stop the Paedophiles” for which his posters attracted much controversy and debate. Many papers reported people publicly pulling down his posters in protest especially in the Wexford region. His three main methods of stopping sex offenders re-offending was to: 1. Electronically tag offenders when leaving prison so they could be monitored 24 hours a day. 2. To make the general public aware of sex offenders in their area. 3. To make participation in rehabilitation programs within the prison system conditional of offenders being released. His argument being “why release untreated dangerous people back into society”. Reid had many other issues in his manifesto but most of which was over shadowed by his anti-paedophile campaign. Some of these include dealing with road deaths, suicide and voter apathy according to many minor newspaper articles. Reid ended up gaining over 10,000 votes in the election which proved many political analysts wrong in predicting he would not gain more than a few hundred. Since the election Clifford T. Reid has returned to Carlow IT were he is pursuing a degree in Communication & PR and gaining a Cert in Business studies. In November he took part in an expedition to the Antarctic where he retraced the footsteps of fellow Kildare man, explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton. According to a local Kildare newspaper he is now planning to climb Kilimanjaro in September 2007. And like everyone now a day he is on bebo also. He web address is www.bebo.com/cliffordtreid
