All but one of those starts came during the 1970 season, when he finished 56th in points. Hirst started his career off in grand style, going to Daytona for the Speedweeks festivities. After a 21st place finish in the Daytona 500 qualifier, Hirst indeed made the 500, where he finished 23rd. After his superspeedway car brought him home a career-best 16th place at Talladega in Hirst's next start, Hirst struggled to round out the year. Mechanical issues left him 30th at Darlington and 25th at Charlotte.

After his superspeedway car brought him home a career-best 16th place at Talladega in Hirst's next start, Hirst struggled to round out the year. Mechanical issues left him 30th at Darlington and 25th at Charlotte. Hirst then made just one start during the 1971 season to close out his career. Once again, though, it came in the prestigious Speedweeks festivities at Daytona. However, the Qualifier event ruined Hirst's chances of making the Daytona 500, as a broken driveshaft early in the event left him in 32nd.
