Starting 29th in the field of forty-five, Russell struggled to a 42nd place finish in the race. However, he rebounded swiftly, rounding out the year with finishes of 7th at Hamburg and 8th at Pittsburgh. Russell's next race came in the 1950 season, when he competed at Dayton. Starting positions in the field of twenty-eight are unknown, but this Russell just had a so-so race and wound up 16th.

The Hong Kong-based yo-yo manufactuer, Whimsy, had produced a metal yo-yo named the Lessur in tribute to Russell's legendary yo-yo design.
