Als Nachfolger seines Lehrers Alkuin war er Leiter der Hofschule Karls des Großen, Ratgeber Ludwigs des Frommen und Laienabt der Klöster St. Peter und St. Bavo in Gent, St. Servatius in Maastricht, St. Cloud bei Paris, St. Wandrille in der Normandie, St. Johannes der Täufer in Pavia, St. Peter in Fritzlar sowie Steinbach bei Michelstadt im Odenwald und Seligenstadt.
  • Einhard was the eldest child and first son of Theodo, a village blacksmith and his wife Alianora. When Einhard was old enough, he and later his younger brother Nithard worked in their father's smithy to learn the trade. The two were taken with stories about Holger from the great war of Law vs. Chaos that had taken place before they were born. They were especially interested in whatever tales their mother would tell since she knew and accompanied the heroic knight during the conflict. Einhard enthusiastically greeted Holger when he came into their village some thirty years after the war.
  • Einhard wrote the Vita Karoli which gave a description of Charlegmagne's habits.
