Historically, Selkaths were devoted to preserving their native oceans and taking care of the ill. For that reason, other species regarded them as a peaceful and helpful people. However, at the time of the Clone Wars, Selkath such as Chata Hyoki and Mantu brought shame to their people's reputation by working as bounty hunters.

Physically the Selkath have skin tones ranging from gray, blue, green and even pink on occasion, with two descending lobes on both sides of their mouths. In addition this species like Wookiees possess a set of claws in their hands which are coated in a poisonous venom. However the usage of these claws was a cultural taboo because the Selkath by in large are a peaceful species however as with any other race their were notable exceptions, these more aggressive individuals were considered outcasts on their home world.

Durant la période de la République Galactique de nombreux Selkath vivait du crime ou du commerce illégal comme Mantu le chasseur de primes. Parmi les Selkaths connus dans toute la galaxie on peut cité Qual, un Maître Jedi.

Cela fit s'effondrer leur économie et la société Selkath se réduisit à des clans tribaux ceux ci oublièrent alors le basic et s'enfoncèrent dans les grottes sous marines, dans l'oubli pour de nombreuses années. Durant la période de la République Galactique de nombreux Selkath vivait du crime ou du commerce illégal comme Mantu le chasseur de primes.
