  • Homewise, a private non-profit 501(c)(3) organization headquartered in Santa Fe, NM, was founded in 1986 as Neighborhood Housing Services of Santa Fe. Its mission is to help working New Mexicans become successful homeowners in order to achieve financial security, strengthen families and increase the economic and social vitality of local communities. During its first six years, NHS-Santa Fe was a small nonprofit engaged in home improvement and rehabilitation of the city's poorer west side. In 1992, Michael Loftin became executive director. Loftin became aware that existing clients were complaining that their grown children could not afford to buy a home in Santa Fe. According to 2010 data from the Economic Policy Institute, housing in Santa Fe costs 20 percent more than the national average. The overall cost of living is 7 percent above the national average. Over the next decade, Loftin and the staff of NHS-Santa Fe, now called Homewise, grew into a full-service agency promoting affordable homeownership through financial counseling and educational classes designed to help Santa Fe's moderate income residents become home owners. Homewise provides free financial and homebuyer education classes, individual financial and home buyer counseling, mortgage and home improvement lending, in-house real estate agents and a qualifying broker, real estate development of new homes, and home improvement services for individuals and families who own their home.
