  • The Deathmatch game mode functions in a similar manner to the game mode of Wanted. However, there are no skin replicates of a recruit's chosen persona, encouraging them to blend to avoid their pursuers, and to use their skills of observation to successfully identify their own targets. Another thing to note about Deathmatch is the size of the training maps, which differ to those in other modes. They are roughly one quarter of the size of the regular map, making for hectic, fast-paced games.

  • Focus particularly on obtaining yellow eco and green eco pick-ups, for offensive weapons and health respectively, as these will prove most useful. Since this is not a linear competition, rear red eco defensive weapons pick-ups are not quite as valuable, though a shield system or attack drone will always prove useful in a pinch.

Going with the classic tracking missiles or Vulcan Fury is generally recommended, especially if you have a live dark eco charge. This event also provides you with the default submachine gun, which can also get the job done if no yellow pick-ups are within your general vicinity. Similarly, pick a durable race car over a fast one, as survival of the fittest is the point of this event. You will more often find yourself coasting along the track while shelling fire than you will running away from predators or engaging in a high-speed pursuit. However, do not entirely ignore blue eco pick-ups, as an effective strategy, especially if you are already ahead, is to find two racers already engaged in combat then kill both of them from farther away. Or, equally effective, is to chase down vehicles that have already been fired upon as they will be easier to kill.

However, there are no skin replicates of a recruit's chosen persona, encouraging them to blend to avoid their pursuers, and to use their skills of observation to successfully identify their own targets. With Deathmatch, there is no compass to guide the recruit; instead, they must use their target's portrait that is located in the top right corner of the Animus' heads-up display to identify and hunt them down. The inner part of the portrait lights up when one is near to their target, and the outer ring is brightly highlighted when in the line of sight of whoever the recruit is assigned to. Another thing to note about Deathmatch is the size of the training maps, which differ to those in other modes. They are roughly one quarter of the size of the regular map, making for hectic, fast-paced games.

The host can set several variables for the Deathmatch:- * The arena to be played on (including the option to choose a random area for each round) * the number of rounds a player must win to win the deathmatch * Number of Hit Points each player starts with * Number of bombs each player starts with * Number of ropes each player starts with * The option to do battle with computer-controlled Spelunkers (called Bots ingame). If Bots is turned ON, bots will be added into the deathmatch so that four Spelunkers will play. Deathmatches are split into several rounds. To win a round, the player must be the last spelunker standing. Matches play mostly the same as in Adventure mode, with a few key differences:- * Whips deal no damage to other spelunkers, but will stun them for a short time. * Spelunkers cannot stomp other spelunkers. * To discourage Spelunkers from utilising camping strategies, if Spelunkers stand still for too long, a targeting reticle will appear over them, dealing 10 points of damage if they do not avoid the imminent psychic attack. * Crates do not contain bomb bags and rope piles, but all other objects have the same probability of appearing in crates. * When all crates are destroyed, more may appear in a random location of the arena later on. * Monsters indigenous to the theme of the area may randomly appear at the start of each round. * When a spelunker dies, they will drop a bag containing all the bombs and ropes they had. * Players that have been killed will become ghosts for the rest of the round. As a ghost, players can float through the air and pass through walls. Pressing the whip button will make the ghost blow a puff of air, knocking back items and stunning live Spelunkers. Players can also animate their ghost with the Bomb and Rope buttons, but this appears to have no practical effect on the battle. Live players can stop ghosts for a short time using the Camera, causing them to pose in a similar manner to The time limit Ghost. Every Spelunker ghost makes a different pose when photographed. * The last Spelunker alive must survive for two seconds to be declared the winner. If they die within that time, for example by environmental hazards or exploding bombs, the round will be considered a draw. * Once a round ends, the whole arena resets ready for another round if necessary.

In both Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2, the kill limit for ranked deathmatches is 25, although this can be altered in custom games. However, one minor difference between the games is that in Resistance: Fall of Man players earn points for assists to contribute to their score, whereas in Resistance 2 players do not earn points for assists. This therefore means that in Resistance: Fall of Man, a player can win the game with 24 kills and 5 assists so they in fact do not need 25 kills.
