Educated at the University of kent, hwe worked in Tv and print journalism in both the UK and USA. Whittle contested the 2015 general election at Eltham, coming third behind the Labour Party and the Conservatives. The party's culture spokesman since 2013, he stood for election to the European Parliament in 2014, on UKIP's party list for the London constituency. As the last of 8 candidates on the list he was not elected. On the same day he stood in elections to Greenwich Council, coming fourth in the three-seat Coldharbour and New Eltham Ward, marginally ahead of the three Labour Party candidates but behind the three successful Conservatives. In September 2015 he was chosen as UKIP's candidate for the 2016 London Mayoral election. He was also placed at the top of the party's London Assembly list for London-wide seats under the additional member "top up" system. He finished fifth in the mayoral contest, but was elected as an Assembly Member.
