  • Synthehol

  • Synthehol is a synthetic variant of alcohol that has no intoxicating and addictive properties. Synthehol was invented by the Ferengi. Ferengi merchants would use it in social settings in which they would serve drinks with actual alcohol to customers while they consume synthehol. Soon the hapless victim would be totally drunk and making all sorts of deals with a Ferengi merchant who was still quite sober. Eventually the secret of synthehol was made public. At first irritated over the loss of their secret, the Ferengi got over their irritation when straight sales of synthehol turned out to be quite sizable.
  • Synthehol (a portmanteau of "synthesized" and "alcohol") is a chemical variant of alcohol. It appears to have the same taste and smell as "real" alcohol to most individuals, but none of the deleterious effects associated with alcohol for most humanoids, such as debilitating intoxication, addiction, and alcohol poisoning. Most humanoids have an enzyme which breaks down the alcohol-like compounds in synthehol. According to Data, synthehol's "intoxicating effects can be easily dismissed." (TNG: "Relics" ) On Ferenginar, Quark was known as "The Synthehol King". (DS9: "Body Parts")

According to Data, synthehol's "intoxicating effects can be easily dismissed." (TNG: "Relics" ) Gene Roddenberry decided synthehol was invented by the Ferengi. (Star Trek: Communicator issue 123, pp. 78) It is suggested in VOY: "The Cloud" that synthehol, like alcohol, can occasionally give its drinker acid heartburn, when Harry Kim tells Tom Paris, "I don't like to drink this late at night; I get an acid heartburn." Synthehol is a regular ingredient in the drinks served on Starfleet vessels and starbases. Some bartenders like Guinan and Quark, however, keep a supply of genuine alcoholic beverages for customers requesting such. (TNG: "Relics" ; DS9, various) The slight chemical difference between synthehol and real alcohol is an annoyance to lovers of alcoholic beverages such as Robert Picard and Montgomery Scott. Robert Picard believed that synthehol corrupted his brother Jean-Luc Picard's taste for wine, while Jean-Luc believed it gave one a greater appreciation for the real thing. (TNG: "Family" ) Captain Scott was able to differentiate alcohol from synthehol when he drank a glass of scotch in the USS Enterprise-D's Ten Forward lounge. He found the taste revolting, and he let the young bartender who served him know it. (TNG: "Relics" ) On Ferenginar, Quark was known as "The Synthehol King". (DS9: "Body Parts") It is unknown whether Quark was actually known by this nickname, or if he made it up himself, as he was speaking somewhat sarcastically when he referred to it. In 2369, during his brief tenure as Grand Nagus, Quark was approached by Nava, who wanted to introduce synthehol to the Gamma Quadrant. Quark thought it sounded like a "very lucrative opportunity." (DS9: "The Nagus") In early 2371, during a downturn in business due to the threat of the Dominion, Quark had a sale on synthehol. (DS9: "The House of Quark") On at least two occasions, Seven of Nine became intoxicated after drinking synthehol, as her Borg implants were not designed to process it. Just one champagne flute of synthehol was enough to give her a blood synthehol level of 0.5%. She suffered similar symptoms to those that alcohol has on non-assimilated Humans. (VOY: "Timeless", "Body and Soul") In 2375, the Kadi ambassador Tomin visited USS Voyager, attended a reception, and drank some syntheholic beverages. It was later realized that Kadi physiology lacks the enzyme which breaks down the alcohol-like substance in synthehol, which caused him to become drunk and attempt to woo Seven of Nine. He later passed out, and The Doctor was able to remove the synthehol with Seven's nanoprobes. (VOY: "Someone to Watch Over Me") On some replicators, a synthehol button was available for easy manual input. This was shown in the It's A Wrap! sale and auction, which features a close-up of a replicator's manual control interface, which included a button for "synthehol". [1]

At first irritated over the loss of their secret, the Ferengi got over their irritation when straight sales of synthehol turned out to be quite sizable. Synthehol subsequently became a popular beverage in the Federation. Despite not having any of the deleterious effects of alcohol, synthehol was still considered an adult beverage. (TNG novel: Strike Zone) Some individuals have negative attitudes towards synthehol and believe it affects the taste of drinks. (TNG episodes: "Up the Long Ladder", "Family", "Relics", DS9 episode: "Body Parts") While visiting the ENTERPRISE-D on their way to D'aaV, Lt. Pug Joseph reffered to Synthehol as Ferengi Bug Juice when asking Guinan for a drink In 2369, during Quark's brief time as Grand Nagus of the Ferengi Alliance, Nava approached him and asked permission to begin selling synthehol in the Gamma Quadrant. Nava agreed to provide Quark with fifty percent of the synthehol profits. (DS9 episode: "The Nagus")
