(TOS: , , )
  • The rank was also used by the Imperial Navy.
  • Fleet Captain is the lowest rank at which a person may assume the duty of overseeing other ships in the Fleet, and is known in this capacity as Fleet Representatives. Some might also be leading their own ships as Commanding Officers. A person of this rank must demonstrate excellent leadership abilities and the willingness to go above and beyond the call of duty. In the Lexington's fleet, at any given time, there are eight Fleet Representatives that assist High Command with Fleet matters.
  • Fleet captain is a post that may be held by senior captains in Federation Starfleet. A fleet captain retains the rank of captain, but has responsibilities that cover more than one ship. The term was used in the 23rd century but was rare by the end of the century and no longer used in the 24th. (TOS: "The Menagerie, Part I", "The Menagerie, Part II", "Whom Gods Destroy") A fleet captain is usually addressed by as "captain" but may be addressed as "fleet captain".
  • Fleet captain was a rank used by Starfleet during the 23rd century. It fell between captain and commodore.
  • Fleet captain is a rare military title that may be bestowed upon senior naval captains for a variety of reasons, the most common of which is to temporarily take command of more than one vessel. The rank can, therefore, be interpreted as a close equivalent to commodore or to the 19th century rank of flag officer. The main distinction of a fleet captain is that normally the title is strictly temporary for the duration of a single mission.[citation needed]
  • Fleet Captain is a rank above Captain and below Commodore/Rear Admiral (Lower Half). Fleet Captain is used mainly as an Honorific title in lieu of promotion to a flag rank.
  • A fleet captain is a senior captain typically in command of a larger starship (a heavy explorer, heavy cruiser, carrier or similar vessel) but who is also tasked with the command authority of more than one vessel. Frequently, a fleet captain is in command of a frontline squadron. In general, this rank is seen as a temporary measure used in case of emergency or fleet engagement, as such a rank is essentially equivalent to that of rear admiral, lower half, but does not carry the privileges of admiralty. A fleet captain could also act as the executive officer to an admiral (generally one of one or two star rank) in command of a particularly large task force.
  • The rank of fleet captain was not traditionally assigned a uniform insignia, however, a rank insignia that was available for Starfleet uniforms in the 2260s could be considered to have an equivalence to the fleet captain grade. The rank system on the uniforms of the time had the possibility of a three-stripe insignia that could be used for fleet captain or vice commodore. (ST reference: Star Fleet Technical Manual)
  • In 2265, after promotion to fleet captain, Christopher Pike passed command of the starship USS Enterprise on to Captain James Kirk. In 2266, as a fleet captain, Pike was engaged in a training exercise aboard an antiquated Class J starship. The vessel's baffle plate ruptured and many of the trainees were killed. A number were saved by Pike – at the cost of him being rendered a "complete invalid". Despite his catastrophic injuries, Pike remained on the active duty roster as a command-grade officer. This was primarily due to Starfleet Command not willing to retire Captain Pike from duty due to the sacrifice he had made while saving cadets. (TOS: "The Menagerie, Part I" , "The Menagerie, Part II" )

(TOS: "The Menagerie, Part I" , "The Menagerie, Part II" ) In the 2260s, Fleet Captain Garth was one of Starfleet's most decorated captains, the hero of the Battle of Axanar. Garth was injured and recovered among the natives of Antos IV, where he learned of the Antosians' bizarre metamorphic biochemistry control. The strain on Garth's system was too much, he was driven insane by learning their abilities. His life was saved, but maddened, he ordered a starship to fire on the planet, the crew mutinied and Fleet Captain Garth was sentenced to treatment at Elba II. (TOS: "Whom Gods Destroy" ) This chart shows only general equivalencies based on the ranks used by many governments on Earth, as well as the rest of the galaxy.

(ST reference: Star Fleet Technical Manual) The 'three-stripe' sleeve insignia in the Star Fleet Technical Manual was specified as a commodore's rank, however, canon sources specify a different insignia for commodores. The general equivalence of fleet captain and vice commodore ranks being referred to as 'commodores' makes this insignia a logical usage of the way it was presented in the manual.
