They are large, bipedal robots with an appearance half-way between a knight and a humanoid tank, with a disproportionally massive torso, having fixed Gatling Guns in place of their lower arms. As the player progresses into the pyramid, the level of the Guards encountered increases. Iron Guards are robotic giants, like Iron Golems, "given form by earth magic, given life by electro magic" that guard the Vault of Sourcerer Jaffar. There was also a much stronger model, resembling a Sphinx, called "Iron Weapon".

He destroyed the organization, as its commander Horia Sima and some other leaders escaped to Germany. When Ion Antonescu, a Fascist leader during World War II came to power during September of 1940, he brought the Iron Guard into the government under the current rule of Horia Sima and the Guard soon launched lots and rampaged massacre killings on Jews. Later in January of 1941, Antonescu used the military to suppress a revolt that the Iron Guard started and the organization was destroyed and later during that time, Horia Sima and other leaders escaped to Germany.

Its members wore green uniforms (meant as a symbol of renewal, and the origin of the occasional reference to them as the Greenshirts - Cămăşile verzi), and greeted each other using the Roman salute. The main symbol used by the Iron Guard was a triple cross (a variant of the triple parted and fretted one), standing for prison bars (as a badge of martyrdom), and sometimes referred to as the "Archangel Michael Cross" (Crucea Arhanghelului Mihail).
