  • Leroy "Chick" Blades (d. 1941) was a guard at Camp Dependable. After participating in the mass-murder of several groups of Negro prisoners, Blades, overwhelmed by the horror of his actions, committed suicide by parking his car in his closed garage and leaving the engine running. He left a widow, Edith, and two sons, Frank and Willie. Blades' suicide inspired Jefferson Pinkard's new method for "reducing populations". Under the pretense of transfer to another camp, the trucks would drive away from the camp with the prisoners being gassed by the exhaust in the process. The trucks would then go to a mass grave site in order to bury the bodies and return empty.
