  • Phoenix Guards are found in Nashkel, after being summoned by Daer'Ragh, and on Labyrinth Level 3 of Durlag's Tower. To kill them, you have to deal 2d4 more damage than the life they actually have. If not, they'll get all their Hit Points back. When you TRULY kill them, they explode in a 6d6 Fireball.

  • The Phoenix Guard do not utter a word. It is forbidden for those who have seen the secrets of time to speak of them, and all who do so take a magical vow of silence from which they can never be released. Viewed by many as a curse, this but a part of a broader dedication that each Phoenix Guard makes to Asuryan; a covenant that fills the Creator God's chosen warriors with a portion of his almighty power. Thus do the Phoenix Guard benefit from divine protection that no sorcery or blade can easily breach, and know a sense of purpose that transcends their mortal origins.[1a]

Although at the time of The Phoenix Guards, and Khaavren's initial enlistment into the ranks of the guard, calling the Phoenix Guard "police" was seen as an insult, by the time of Five Hundred Years After, the organization had in fact become such. There is also a special division of the guard known as the Special Tasks Group who are responsible for surveillance and covert operations.

Thus do the Phoenix Guard benefit from divine protection that no sorcery or blade can easily breach, and know a sense of purpose that transcends their mortal origins.[1a] As the sworn warriors of Asuryan, the Phoenix Guard lie beyond the rule of nobles and princes. Only the Phoenix King, vessel of Asuryan's will, can command them. Indeed, they often act as the king's personal emissaries upon the battlefield, taken by many Elves as a sign that, even though the Phoenix King himself cannot be present at the battle, it is never far from his thoughts. When their lord orders them to war, the Phoenix Guard are grim and resolute, clad in ornate armour, and armed with tall ceremonial halberds that can cleave a foe from top to tail in a single well-aimed blow. While their stony quiet is unnerving, the aura of godly might that surrounds them is far more horrifying. Their eyes blaze with a fiery intensity borne of unshakable faith in the Creator God of the Elves, and the air around a regiment of Phoenix Guard literally throbs with the raw power of Asuryan. Any who would stand in their way are assailed by an overwhelming sense of dread.[1a] Regiments of Phoenix Guard are always found where the fighting is fiercest and victory hardest won, for their gift allows them to see confluences and crux points upon his appointed hour of death, but none seek to delay that fatal moment. Whether battle brings victory or defeat, life or death, the Phoenix Guard fight on without fear.[1a]

On the field of battle, the Phoenix Guard were no less impressive and were storied as providing an impenetrable ring of courage and steel, barring the approach of any enemy who dared challenge their Primarch. They fought many spheres of battle, from lightning swift assault forces to veteran tactical units, but it was their Terminators who were most feared, their martial skill all but unmatched across the Legions. During the IIIrd Legion's battle to conquer the xenos world of Laeran, the Phoenix Guard took part in the final extermination of the serpentine Laer species. The entire unit was slain on the world of Tarsus in the Perdus Region of the galaxy after Fulgrim, already under the influence of Chaos through the Laer Daemonsword he had captured on Laeran, took offence at the Eldar Farseer Eldrad Ulthran's warning about Horus' corruption by Chaos, and proceeded to open fire on the Farseer and his troops from Craftworld Ulthwe. A new Phoenix Guard was then recruited and accompanied Fulgrim during both his fateful meeting with Horus where he finally embraced Chaos and in his abortive attempt to recruit Ferrus Manus to the Traitors' cause aboard Ferrus' own flagship where they successfully slaughtered the Morlocks Terminators who served as Ferrus' own bodyguard unit. While the Phoenix Guard served Fulgrim through the Battle of Terra, it is unknown if the unit still exists and serves as the Daemon Prince's bodyguard on the unknown Daemon World he now calls home.
  • The Phoenix Guard is what the Imperial Guard is called under a Phoenix emperor. Although at the time of The Phoenix Guards, and Khaavren's initial enlistment into the ranks of the guard, calling the Phoenix Guard "police" was seen as an insult, by the time of Five Hundred Years After, the organization had in fact become such. Broken into two parts, the White Sash Battalion and the Red Boot Company, the latter division became the elite protectors of the emperor and the former became a much larger police force. The rivalry between the two groups can be fierce, though there is at least one example, Thack, of a soldier transferring between groups. There is also a special division of the guard known as the Special Tasks Group who are responsible for surveillance and covert operations. Phoenix Guards are known in Jhereg slang as "birds," due to the phoenix being a bird. Jhereg usually find Phoenix Guards will take bribes in regards to small matters such as unlicensed gambling. No matter how dire a Jhereg's situation, he should never attempt to fight or kill a Phoenix Guard, as that is much more trouble than it's worth. Khaavren, brigadier of the Guard after the Interregnum, is known as "Papa Cat" (mostly to members of branches of service other than the Phoenix Guard) because he is a Tiassa.
