  • Item Levels, or ilvl, is a property applied to every item to determine the strength of its magical affixes, if any, on the item. This is generally done through the process of comparing an affix's Quality Level to the item's Item Level. To name an example, an Item with an Item Level of 3 can access affixes that are in the quality level range 1-3. These generally include the weakest bonuses to stats, resists, and other things.
  • The item level is a rather important property of every item. It has two main functions — reflect the item's usefulness and at the same time determine the minimum level a character must have in order to use it (see Minimum level requirements and Item Level section below). Also, item level is tied to many enchants which can only be applied to items of a particular item level or higher (usually 35, 60, or 300).
  • Item Level is a statistic possessed by all equippable items (other than consumables), representing the general PvE power level of the item comparable to other items. Item level has no relationship to character level, and characters of any level can equip items of any item level, providing they meet any other requirements of the item (i.e. Player Level Requirements or Role-specific). The item levels of all a player's equipped items are used to determine the player's combat rating. The Item Level has no influence nor is it influenced by the item's rarity (common, uncommon, rare, or epic): some uncommon item can have a higher item level than an epic item, and vice-versa.

Unmodded PvP equipment always has an item level of 30. With game update 25 an extra PvP Item Level was introduced.
Up until Patch 3.2, the true item level was hidden in the game, and only UI mods can read it via the function GetItemInfo. Now, however, a new option has been added under Display in the Interface Options to show the item level on item tooltips. As Hyzenthlei (Tauren Shaman 60 on Zul'Jin) first found out, and was later confirmed by a presentation at Blizzcon, Blizzard uses a formula to calculate item level from the item's stats.[citation needed] The following is an attempt to reverse-engineer this formula. This text is based on a forum post by Hyzenthlei (the original author) in the Blizzard forums, but that post has since disappeared.
