He graduated from MIT with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and a commission as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army via the Army Reserve Officers' Training Corps. While at MIT, Ethan decided to become an intelligence officer. Upon graduating from the Military Intelligence Officer Basic Course at the U.S. Army Intelligence Center, he was assigned to the 513th Military Intelligence Brigade at Fort Gordon. Ethan served as an all-source intelligence officer within the 297th Military Intelligence Battalion. He later attended the Defense Intelligence Agency's Military Operations Training Course and was eventually assigned to the 202nd Military Intelligence Battalion as a human intelligence officer. With numerous commendations, Ethan left the Army after eight years of service. He then moved to Washington, DC. and was hired by the Impossible Mission Force. IMF is a high-tech "information services" firm that provides open source intelligence gathering and security management services to corporations and individuals in the private sector. As a junior associate with the firm, Ethan was tasked with such work as information security consulting and information brokering, as well as corporate investigations. Eventually, his exemplary work caught the attention of IMF's Board of Directors and they concluded that he would be perfect for work with the hidden side of the firm. Unknown to the public, in addition to its overt work in the private sector, IMF is also contracted by the U.S. government to covertly engage in dangerous and highly sensitive international missions that have been deemed "impossible." Specifically, this private organization is tasked with performing short-term deep-cover unilateral espionage operations and other covert and clandestine actions that for either political or legal reasons are too sensitive and risky for the CIA or any other organization within the U.S. government. When intelligence deemed critical to national security cannot be obtained by traditional entities and means, IMF is contracted to conduct physical operations. However, because the missions in which it engages are of an extremely sensitive nature, success will almost never come solely from the barrel of a gun. Subtlety is IMF's watchword. Although he was initially only told that the job involved "special government contracts", Ethan enthusiastically accepted the position. Afterwards he was informed of the nature of the work. Ethan then went through an intensive operational training course to train him in so-called "operational intelligence" or "tradecraft" skills. This means, he was taught the finer points of espionage such as surveillance, clandestine photography, infiltration, and exfiltration techniques. Ethan was also trained for night parachuting, tactical high speed emergency driving, rappelling from helicopters, and dry and wet demolition. Because of his military experience, he excelled through training. Once Ethan completed training, he was promoted to senior associate and placed in an elite "IM Force" team. By assuming false identities and utilizing the most advanced technology, Ethan and the rest of the members of this highly trained "IM Force" go deep undercover, putting their lives on the line in the field to seize critical intelligence or apprehend dangerous and elusive individuals that pose a threat to America's national security. Because IMF is a private intelligence service independent of the official U.S. government national security apparatus, Ethan can disregard various laws and international treaties in order to accomplish a mission. Once his orders have been given, there are no required procedures for the fulfillment of the mission. Ethan can use whatever means he deems necessary. Success is all that matters. The downside is, of course, obvious. If he were to be captured or killed, the IMF Company Secretary would disavow any knowledge of his actions. Height: 5'11" Weight: 175 lbs. He is also an excellent marksman and a quick-witted "McGyver-type" agent. Ethan excels in using IMF's key piece of technology, the facemaker, showing the great control over his mind and facial muscles required to make the artificial faces last. Like every other IMF field operative, Ethan is well educated, multi-talented and trained in a variety of areas including long distance surveillance, computers, demolition tactics and even hand to hand combat. Ethan also has been trained rigorously in the ways of stealth, deception, persuasion and the art of "invisibility." He has an incredible gift for observation and detective work and works well solo or as part of a group. Ethan is also highly charismatic and has demonstrated himself to be a very talented actor, both in terms of disguising himself as other people and in terms of hiding his true feelings and reactions.
