- An outrunner is a type of brushless electric motor. This type of motor spins its outer shell around its windings, much like motors found in ordinary CD-ROM computer drives. In fact, CD-ROM motors are frequently rewound into brushless outrunner motors for small park flyer aircraft. Parts to aid in converting CD-ROM motors to aircraft use are commercially available. Outrunners spin much slower than inrunner motors (though still considerably faster than ferrite motors) while producing far more torque. This makes an outrunner an excellent choice for directly driving electric aircraft propellers since they eliminate the extra weight and complexity of a gearbox.

These will be the first types of vehicles available to players during the course of Borderlands and Borderlands 2. Outrunners can seat up to two people; one to drive and one to man the turret. They have a durable suspension, allowing large jumps with minimal vehicle damage. They are also equipped with afterburners mounted to the rear of the runner, allowing temporary faster movement speed at the cost of maneuverability. Bandits are also known to drive a version of the Outrunner, known as an Out Rider, and use these vehicles in the open expanses of The Dahl Headlands and The Salt Flats.
