| Background | - In Borderlands CL4P-TPs served as the stewards of Pandora, and were found in populated areas and guarding access points between different maps. They were more commonly found in need of repair, and would give rewards when fixed.
Lawrence De Quidt founded Hyperion's artificial intelligence branch, prototyping the CL4P-TP robots. In his later years, De Quidt dedicated his life to correcting personality flaws in the early prototypes for the CL4P-TP steward bots. He passed away before making this dream a reality.
Cl4P-TP units were all programmed with smart-aleck and overtly eccentric personalities. Although each CL4P-TP was slightly different, they almost universally exhibited eccentric behaviour and annoying tendencies and habits, such as regularly shirking responsibilities. Because of this, and their relative uselessness when it came to even the most menial jobs, when Hyperion took control of Pandora, Handsome Jack attempted to have them all destroyed. After the events of the Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel and the DLC Claptastic Voyage, he obtained the H-source and the codes within, which he used to destroy nearly every CL4P-TP in existence. However Claptrap, the original Fyrestone CL4P-TP, survived and helps the new Vault Hunters throughout Borderlands 2.

| Strategy | - Claptraps are fragile enemies when fought. They uniformly have a vulnerable point in their centrally-mounted optic sensor. Claptrap Partisans are basic gunnery units, Kamikaze Claptraps wheel themselves into point blank range and self-destruct, and Stabby Claptraps wheel into close range in order to attack with a series of melee strikes.

| Involvement | - When the Vault Hunters leave the bus at the very beginning of Borderlands they are met by Claptrap, who introduces them to Dr. Zed. He later takes them to the Fyrestone gate in the mission Claptrap Rescue, where he is damaged by bandits. The Guardian Angel then says to get a repair kit and perform the first CL4P-TP rescue.
CL4P-TPS are later met throughout the storyline, and are used to open the travel points between new areas. They also notify players when new missions are available, from either bounty boards or NPCs.
Damaged Claptrap Rescues
Despite their friendly nature, CL4P-TPs were typically abused and used as target practice by bandits. Players are alerted to the presence of damaged robots by their moaning and complaining . Talking to the CL4P-TP triggers a mission to find and return with a Repair Kit. Once the CL4P-TP is fixed, it may give a Backpack SDU on the first play-through. As an additional reward, certain CL4P-TPs will also lead the way to hidden chests by unlocking a door or removing a concealing panel. On the second play-through, the CL4P-TPs generally give grenade mods or shields.
Claptrap's New Robot Revolution

At the conclusion Borderlands' story, Claptrap was reprogrammed by Hyperion to attempt to kill the Vault Hunters. However, when he saw how CL4P-TPs were abused throughout Pandora, he broke his programming and created a Claptrap army.
In the fourth DLC Claptrap's New Robot Revolution the Vault Hunters are tasked with destroying him, now called the Interplanetary Ninja Assassin Claptrap.
