Ovenden was born in Sheffield, England on November 29, 1976. His father, Canon John Ovenden, was the Chaplain to Queen Elizabeth II. He began singing as a child, where he served as a boy chorister at St. Paul's Cathedral (London) choir. He is also an accomplished pianist, but it was his vocal talents that earned him scholarships to Eton (also attended by Princes William and Harry) and later the New College, Oxford. Later, he studied drama at Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Arts. Ovenden has made multiple appearances in London West End musical productions and in concert, both in the U.S. and UK. In 2012, Ovenden originated the role of J.M. Barrie in the musical adaptation of the film "Finding Neverland". He also appeared in concert at Carnegie Hall in New York, and in the 2010 and 2012 BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall, singing the music of the great American musicals.
