Daraus resultiert eine Hyperschwerkraft, die alles umliegende unaufhaltsam anzieht. 2269 gerät die USS Enterprise (NCC-1701) in die Anziehungskraft des Sterns und kann nur kurz vor dem Aufprall in eine Umlaufbahn einschwenken. In Folge dieses Ereignisses bemächtigt sich ein körperloses Wesen der Enterprise um mit Hilfe dieser der Schwerkraft des Sterns zu entkommen. In einem geschickten Manöver kann die Crew des Schiffes das Wesen jedoch dazu bringen das Schiff in Richtung Stern zu verlassen, welches dann dort gefangen ist, ohne das es eine Gefahr für andere Raumschiffe wird. According to Star Trek: Star Charts (p. 13) and Stellar Cartography: The Starfleet Reference Library ("Federation Historical Highlights, 2161-2385"), "Quasar M17" was located in the Beta Quadrant, at the fringe of the Milky Way Galaxy, near the galactic barrier.
