Musically precocious, Pyotr began piano lessons at age five with a local woman, Mariya Palchikova, and within three years he was the best piano student that Mariya ever had. Some historians attribute this event to Tchaikovsky sexuality (or lack there of). In 1850, his father was appointed director of the St Petersburg Technological Institute.
