Things take a turn for the worse when Madame D.'s family falsely accuses him of stealing the picture. Our hero employs a young man named Zero as his lobby boy and, aided by the lad and a feisty baker named Agatha, Gustave sets out on a quest to clear his name, going against overwhelming odds to evade the police, ruthless fascist officers, and especially, the wicked mob boss Dmitri and the lethal assassin J. G. Jopling. Jopling is defeated, but Dmitri escapes. In the end, Gustave gives up his life for Zero, who lives to tell the tale.
