There have been many sightings of this so called "Claw Worm" that some people have even been taken to the emergency room with a bite that they report came from the creature. The Tatzelwurm is described to have the body of a cat with fearsomely sharp claws and from the waist down is a serpent like tail. Some reports say it is green and covered in a slimy mucus. Many reports where the witness attempted to stab the Tatzelwurm say that it's blood spewed out onto them burning where it splattered.

Der Name setzt sich zusammen aus Tatze, was je nach Zusammenhang Bein, Pfote oder Klaue bedeuten kann, und Wurm, was darauf hindeutet, dass es sich beim Tatzelwurm um einen „Halbdrachen“ mit einem schlangenartigen Unterleib und zwei prankenbesetzten Vorderbeinen handelt.

The Tatzelwurm is possibly particularly curious and may be an escaped hybrid mutant from a lab in the area. Skeptics often say that the Tatzelwurm is a large salamander that attacks people because it may have very sensitive teeth that cant eat through tougher animal prey which may explain the reason it's blood burns as if it where a poison. Other names for the Tatzelwurm are Stollenwurm (Tunnel Worm) Bergstutzen (Mountain Stump) and Springwurm. (Jumping Worm)

O animal tem sido descrito como de 60 cm a 1,5 metro de comprimento, grosso como o braço de um homem. Alguns o descrevem com uma cabeça que lembra a de um gato, apesar de coberta de escamas, em vez de pelos. Certas descrições dizem que possui apenas duas patas dianteiras curtas (13 cm), outras que tem quatro patas e outras, ainda, que não tem nenhuma. Alguns dizem tê-lo visto saltar longas distâncias (8 a 15 metros) ou mesmo voar. Uma história do verão de 1921, em Hochfilzen, sul da Áustria, um Tatzelwurm saltou sobre um pastor e um caçador clandestino, que lhe deram um tiro e fugiram aterrorizados. Também há relatos de ataques a porcos. Para os criptozoologistas que acreditam em sua existência, seria uma espécie desconhecida de anfíbio ou de réptil. Poderia estar relacionado, por exemplo, aos anfisbênios, grupo de répteis semelhantes a lagartos sem patas, como o que é conhecidos no Brasil como "cobra-cega" ou "ubijara" (Amphisbaena alba, de até 60 cm), ou que têm apenas duas patas dianteiras, como o lagarto-toupeira do México (Bipes biporus, com 17 a 24 cm de comprimento).
