Erstmals ist Diddy Kong, zumindest in Bezug auf den Untertitel, Namensgeber eines Spiels. Darüber hinaus tritt Dixie Kong das erste Mal überhaupt auf, die Donkey Kong als spielbaren Charakter ablöst. Insgesamt wurde das Spiel in der SNES-Version rund 5,15 Millionen abgesetzt, wodurch es hinter dem Original und dem neuestem Spiel der Reihe Donkey Kong Country Returns das dritterfolgreichste Spiel seiner Serie ist. Zudem wurde mit Donkey Kong Land 2 eine Art Fortsetzung für den Game Boy auf den Markt gebracht, des Weiteren ist das Spiel seit 2004 für den GBA und seit 2007 für die Virtual Console erhältlich.
