  • Pressure cuff
rdfs:comment
  • A pressure cuff, also known as a blood pressure cuff, was a device used to measure blood pressure. The device consisted of an inflatable cuff that would restrict blood flow and a meter to measure the pressure. During a physical exam, an auscultator would be used in conjunction with the pressure cuff, which enabled a physician to be able to listen to blood pressure sounds. With the pressure cuff wrapped around the patient's upper arm, the end of the auscultator would be placed against the pit of the patient's elbow. The doctor would then listen to the sounds made by the blood in the artery while slowly releasing pressure in the cuff.

Prior to an electroconvulsive therapy session, an additional pressure cuff would be placed on the patient's foot and inflated to prevent the anesthesia and muscle relaxants from reaching the patient's toes.
