It comprised sixteen in-person campuses. The flagship campus, Chapel Hill (Lyran classification: research university), was founded in the late 18th century. It comprised a law school, a medical school and a dental school. Students at the Chapel Hill campus were known as Tar Heels. Often when one talks about the University of North Carolina without reference to a particular campus, the Chapel Hill campus will be assumed.
  • Chartered in 1789, the University of North Carolina was one of the first public universities in the United States and the only one to graduate students in the eighteenth century. Originally comprising a single campus in Chapel Hill, today it is a multi-campus university composed of all 16 of North Carolina's public universities, as well as the NC School of Science and Mathematics, the nation's first public residential high school for gifted students. Ariane Binks earned a bachelors degree and a masters degree in history at Chapel Hill through its accelerated BA/MA program. She also played fencing as a Tar Heel. Her senior undergraduate thesis was about how the Battle of Klach D'Kel Brakt affected lightsaber commerce in the Briar Patch. (Star Trek: False Vacuum: "Black Tornado") Meanwhile, Ariane's masters thesis was on a topic related to the Klingon-Lyran relations during the ISC War of Pacification, capitalizing on UNC-Chapel Hill's renown in late-23rd century Klingon history. (Star Trek: False Vacuum: "Structural Unemployment") Ariane commented, in front of Catherine Mouranger, that the Yugra State University Checkmates would be blown out on the gridiron by the Tar Heels. (Star Trek: False Vacuum: "Arthur Porter and the Corpse of Azkapanama")
