She is one of the only three Asians to reach 116, the others being Jiroemon Kimura and Misao Okawa. She never held the title of oldest living person as Jeanne Calment (1875–1997) was still alive when she died. She is the second oldest Japanese person ever, and the 11th-oldest person ever. She married at age 20 and had three sons and a daughter, and separated from her husband at age 38 in 1917.
