  • Built by Spalding & Cross between 1889 and 1894, Manchester's Victoria Square (located in the industrial suburb of Ancoats) was among the first purpose built blocks of council flats in Europe. Known locally as the Labourer's Dwellings (and still to this day referred to by locals as the Dwellings), Victoria Square comprised 237 double tenements and 48 single. Each flat had its own bathroom and the flats had shared laundry facilities for the tenants with drying facilities located in the top rooms of the four corner towers of the building. This was an attempt to minimise bronchial illnesses by keeping damp air from drying clothes out of the flats.
